Most Italians and people in general are not fans of guys in real life that are connected. Many disown their own family members if they get involved with mobsters even if they just associate with them and build friendships. I've seen it happen first hand.
They think guys who are mobsters and the people that associate with them are scumbags.
The episode in the Sopranos where they were all sitting around the dinner table ripping Doctor Melfe the entire time for simply agreeing to take Tony on as a client is just how it is in real life. They are very bigoted against Mob guys.
That honestly depends on the environment you're in. I frequent quite some "blue collar" places over where I live - which is a former mining region on the country border with big Italian, Turkish, Greek, Moroccan, Albanian and Dutch Traveller communities - and a lot of people (especially young guys) are going out of their way to associate themselves with known gangsters. Law abiding family members of gangsters may not agree with the criminal lifestyle but still flaunt their family connections with at least some kind of pride.
Even though movies and shows basically always tell you that the criminal lifestyle never ends well, the allure of gangsters is huge.
