Tattoo parlors were illegal in NYC from 1961 until 1997 after being banned for allegedly causing a hepatitis b breakout. Subsequently, only a few remained keeping the art alive, two of these were Thom DeVita and Sal Polito. DeVita operated a parlor out of his apartment on E.4th St and Polito off Empire Blvd in Pigtown(Lefferts Gardens), Brooklyn. Polito did some work for Feddie DiNome, which are visible in many photos, and did a devil on Anthony Senters arm and even Roy DeMeo had his calf tattooed. Crazy Sal DeSarno is the most famous bearer of Polito's art when he made the cover of the papers.
