In 2017 Nicola Femia , known as Rocco, considered by the investigators a boss of the 'Ndrangheta, stationed in Ravenna, had been sentenced to 26 years in prison after a judge found him guilty of running a major illegal online poker and casino operation.
Investigations showed Femia had contacts in Romania and London, as well as three police officers helping him run a series of online poker and casino sites.
Hosted in the UK and Romania but offering unlicensed poker and casino games to players in Italy, the websites were made available to players via the same venues where rigged slots were housed.
Following a trial that took more than three years to complete, a court in Bologna found the Femia family guilty of running an online gambling empire worth a suspected $65 million.
