'Ndrangheta, sentences of up to 18 years for the Barbaro clan in the shortened trial

Nine months after the arrests came the abbreviated first instance sentence that had led to 17 arrests between Milan and Pavia as part of an investigation into the 'Ndrangheta in Lombardy. Sixteen years and 8 months were inflicted on Rocco Barbaro, 31, and 18 years and 6 months for his father Antonio, 54. The investigation last January had led to the unveiling of the existence of historic 'Ndrangheta families originating in Platì (Reggio Calabria) and rooted in the north, in particular in the territories straddling the provinces of Pavia, Milan and Monza Brianza and in the Turin area.

Among the convicts also Domenico Sergi at 8 years and 8 months. The arrests were carried out on January 10 with charges ranging from criminal association aimed at drug trafficking to the possession and carrying of weapons up to a series of extortion episodes with the aggravating circumstance of the mafia method.
