"Technically" that's correct. Once in, you're in for life. Meaning you are always a "member"

But many, many members (thousands) have "aged" out and just retired when the got into their late 60s and 70s. Not all mafioso stay active all their lives. Especially those who make a lot of money and become wealthy. After awhile, many say to themselves, "what do I need this for anymore?"

Of course there are many others who stay active until the day the die. It's really a very personal decision, often based on wealth, power, influence, (or the lack thereof), and the "need" or the member involved.
