I have a question about Anthony Carfano; I know he was a Luciano/Genovese captain but how powerful was he?? He’s rarely talked about on these boards.

He was whacked in fall of 1959 because he was opposed to Vito Genovese being boss of the family.

I read a while back that he was called to meetings with Catena/Strollo and Miranda to smooth things out; but he failed to show up. This probably sealed his fate….

What was the reason for him to be so bold?? Was he really that powerful to miss meetings with the administration. I also know he was close with Albert Anastasia (I would love to know more about the extent of partnership and friendship) They had been close since C:1954 or so…

Would love some responses!

Bonanno soldier Anthony Mirra is said to have been the killer.

Really? I’ve never heard of that; That’s interesting.

Why did Genovese wait a couple years to remove Carfano??

He could have bumped Carfano down; had him “put out to pasture/retire” or had him killed much sooner; but he allowed Carfano to keep disrespecting him..failing to show up to meetings; etc..

Even Costello told Carfano to respect Genovese as the boss.

Obviously that didn’t happen.

Yes, if it's true, it makes me wonder if Mirra started out on record with the Genovese Family before going to the Bonannos.

It’s a good possibility; but wasn’t Mirra’s uncle; Al Embarrato in the Bonanno family by the 1950’s?

It’s interesting to hear that Vito Genovese might have used another family (Mirra) to get rid of Carfano. The Genovese’s were powerful enough and smart enough to make it a in-side job.

Antonio (Little Augie Pisano) Carfano, was one of the MOST powerful and original members of the Luciano/Genovese family. He even "predated" the formation of that borgata, dating all the way back to the early Napolitani/Calabrese "Camorra" of Downtown Brooklyn in the 1910s-1920s era. He was a contemporary of such iconic historical Camorrista as Frankie Yale. After Yale's killing, Carfano and other went on to amalgamate with a blended Luciano crew.

But Little Augie was a very serious, and very respected, mafioso!

@NYMafia

Why did it take Vito Genovese almost 2 years to get rid of Carfano??

Carfano was being disrespectful at the start…

Costello told him to calm down; but that went on deaf ears.

Off topic; What’s ironic about it; Frank Abbatemarco (Profaci captain) died almost exactly 2 months later the same year (1959) for being disrespectful to his boss.

They killed a girl with him, terrible. According to Valachi, Carano didn't come in when called because he was scared. I guess that's why they didn't kill him right away, either he was laying low, or maybe they figured he was too scared shitless to be a threat, but then he did something else to piss Genovese off.

With a man like Carfano, a lot of politics and backdoor moves are often required. Little Augie was still a highly respected and well-liked member. An "original." You don't clip a guy like that so easily. Vito, an extremely sly and shifty mafioso bided his time. And when the time was right, we moved on Carfano.

FYI, Abbatemarco also dated back to the era I speak of with Carfano and Yale. In fact, his brother Michael Abbatemarco was killed about the same time as Yale which completely disrupted their crew, leading to guys like Frank and Carfano "realigning" with the Profaci and Luciano crews.

It was a major shift and sea change, and the start of the "new" era of mob guys.

He probably played a role in Yale's murder. He was also linked to the murder of Frank Marlow.

Supposedly, it was a falling out with Al Capone that led to Yale's murder. Al allegedly sent a few guys east to kill Yale in Brooklyn. Or maybe a few local fellas did it as a favor. These things are largely lost to history at this stage of the game. 100 years later

I think Carfano's loyalty was with Frank Costello, and he was bitter about his downfall. I can imagine he hated Vito Genovese.
