The website where I found this story has since been defunct so I don't have all of the details, but here goes. Sometime in the 1960s when Mafia godfather Tommy Lucchese was undergoing cancer treatment, the doctor told him that his bill was $12,000. The don took out a fat roll of cash and peeled off 12k and gave it to the doctor. Anyway I just love this story about my favorite, legendary gangster. Adjust for inflation, and you'll see how much 12 grand was in the 1960s.
