Can anyone please explain to me why mobsters of today dress like such slobs and hobos? I mean, you don't have to wear $7,000 suits to look dapper, you can even look fresh in designer jeans and t-shirts. But generally speaking, many mobsters today look like complete slobs in baggy sweatpants and shorts with wife beaters and flip-flops. I'm a firm believer that how you dress determines if those you interact with and do business with take you seriously or not. I mean, what politician or big businessman is going to break bread with some fat fuck in a sweat suit? Vito Rizzuto is probably the most modern example of a Mafioso who could sit down with people from all layers of society, but man! He was dapper.

All Americans dress like slobs and hobos today. Mobsters live in their time like everyone else. In the 1940s everyone wore suits.

"...the successful annihilation of organized crime's subculture in America would rock the 'legitimate' world's foundation, which would ultimately force fundamental social changes and redistributions of wealth and power in this country. Meyer Lansky's dream was to bond the two worlds together so that one could not survive without the other." - Dan E. Moldea

Vincent Gigante mostly just wore a bathrobe, pajamas and slippers but everyone took him very seriously. He even attended a commission meeting wearing that outfit.

What Oak said. In fact, if you saw anyone outside a business district wearing a suit and tie, you'd probably notice him--just what a Mob guy wouldn't want.

Gigante did dress like that, however he still looked like a Mafia don. He just had that look and was able to pull it off. However, the media had a field day with Bonanno mobster Joseph Chilli III, even calling him The Slobfather, even though he wasn't a boss. Article below.

It a my opinion but more criminals in Naples even if have milions in cash under the bed, they don't dress in expensive clothes or use luxury cars so that when they are arrested they won't have to worry about the tax authorities looking for property to seize or looking for the cash they are hiding, and very often they also ask for the help of the public defender.
Maybe the mobsters do the same thing.

Some of yous guys really live in fantasyland about what the life is really like. Or at least what it has been like since I’ve been old enough to remember.

Gigante looked like a fucking head case. Pissing on the street, talking to lamp posts, mumbling to himself. How the fuck did he look like a mafia don?

Gigante had a good reason for act like a crazy man and until 1998 he stayed out of prison.

Yes, I'm well aware of his crazy act furio. I'm just pointing out he looked like a lunatic, not a mafia don.

You're correct Neo, those who see otherwise are just rationalizing because its someone they don't "hate". I guarantee if Skinny Joe or John Gotti dressed like the Chin they'd insult them to no end. Because it's personal with some folks and not they're opinions are not always equally applied. The Chin looked like shit, but it worked for him. But don't ever try and tell me he looked the so called part of a "Don" what ever that look is today because tomorrow i'll be reading it's different

Furio, mobsters in Naples may not dress in suits, but many (not all) of them do dress in pressed jeans and t-shirts by high-end fashion designers like Emporio Armani, Versace, and D-Squared. But otherwise you make a good point.

Gigante did look like shit, but the respect those around him gave him made it pretty clear that he had power. I prefer a boss like Gigante over Gotti and Merlino any day. Low-key and was a stickler for Mafia rules and traditions.

Yes,but I'm referring to middle or low level soldiers of the biggest clans or an average soldier in the small clans. If the LE seize everything, their families probably won't have money to live in a decent manner, even the DiLauros hidden bottles full of diamonds in secure places because diamonds are easy to sell in black market.

Probably because everyone is still working remote because of COVID, even the mob doesn't get out of their sweatpants. But I'm sure they'll be back to business casual next year with jeans on Fridays.....

In what way did he still look like a mafia don?

He looked like a fucking hobo nutjob, wandering around disheveled, talking to dumpsters. Yes it was an act. So what? He looked like shit by any definition of the word.

There are some weird threads on here lately. Maybe these guys dress like trailer trash because for the most part they are a bunch of dumb fucking mobsters who can barely tie their shoes.

Exactly Hollander, and the Italian underworld loves many of those brands too.

alicecooper, you act like he was doing all those things 24-7. And nothing weird about questioning why so many mobsters today don't even try to be fashionable. Think I'm the only one? Go to the comment section of any recent article on any mob bust and you'll see loads of comments criticizing their sloppy clothes, probably a tie between comments on their hobo attire and comments on their goofy nicknames.
