At the end of his excellent book, "The Five Families," Selwyn Raab noted that, after Giuliani successfully prosecuted his RICO case, US Attorneys all over the country were falling over themselves to get their share of glory by going Mob bosses in their jurisdictions. But, he added, after 9/11, a lot of FBI and Justice Department manpower that was dedicated to Mob prosecutions was diverted to the war on terrorism.

To restate the obvious: Today's Mob "leaders" believe in "Cosa Mia," not "Cosa Nostra." But, as long as people want drugs, prostitution, gambling, loans they don't qualify for, goods that "fall off the back of a truck," etc, there will always be a Mob of some kind to support their illicit needs.
