Pennisi strikes me as someone who didn't belong in that life, and was only made because he did a lot of time for killing someone over a girl as a teenager. He never had any rackets or money making skills, and violence isn't a sought after attribute in today's mafia.
I don't think he would have been accepted in the past either. I don't think serving a lot of time is always an instant path to the mafia.
