Struck first?You can't just kill a boss. Castellano was the only one done without commission support and look what happened. They went after Gotti hard.

Salvie only possibility was to escape from Philly,even if he would personally whacked Scarfo,he would be suddendly killed because the Commission wouldn't give him a pass.
Maybe if he killed Scarfo and get on the lam,who know the next boss,one of the Piccolos? Who know,maybe with time could give him a pass like Casella. But its just hypothetys.

Ya good question but Salvie life would have been over in a few months especially since he dissed the merlinos with the wedding so I am guessing that Chuckie Merlino becomes boss and then whacks salvie and then Chuckie gets whacked or put down and leonetti becomes the boss? I dunno

I don't think Chuckie would be the boss maybe some old times like the Piccolos and I think Salvie would have some supporters thanks to his father.

His best bet would have been to get out of Dodge, make himself scarce, and see how things played out without him. Then, after all the convictions, put out some feelers to see whether it was ok for him to come back. That being said, he probably would have been pinched at some point too.

Leonetti would've ended up ratting on Salvie as well. He would've had to kill scarfo and Leonetti. But he didn't know Leonetti was going to rat. Would the crow really not Have ratted if Scarfo was dead? Too many variables. He was involved with a lot of murders. Because of Salvie, that Riccobene civilian relative at the jewelry store blew his brains out. I agree that Scarfo shouldn't have killed him for the reason he did, but he wasn't this docile Mafioso who has a little shy business. He was a killer and involved with drugs.

Eddie Lino, Frank DeCicco, Patty Testa, Bobby Boriello all directly died because of Gotti killing Castellano.
