NYM and Lisa: Why don't you just ignore the trolls and keep up with your good work. The picture you paint of today's Mob is right on. You have to wonder: how do they stay in business? The answer is in your first paragraph: a reflection of society. As long as "civilians" want to buy drugs, get stuff that fell off the back of a truck, indulge degenerate gambling habits, patronize prostitutes, and otherwise break the law, they're going to be served by organized crime. Bingo! I totally agree. I think it will continue. Organized crime will always be around. We may not recognize it as an entity as in years past. But I do agree that the Mafia, and fringe groups that satellite it will remain for the foreseeable future. It's amazing that in the NY/NJ area there is still a structure and hierarchy with 6 crime families in place.

They are nowhere near their former glory, but the Genoveses and the Gambinos remain very powerful entities.

Ralphie,
How so? Just saying they're powerful doesn't make them so. Provide some more information please to support your claim.
My claim? All you need to do is go through the indictments of the last 10 years. Do you even read indictments? FFS. At least if you're going to post a picture of me...post one that's current not from 10 years ago....that f-ing picture is the worst picture of me. So fuck you Ralphie for a being a dick. Check my FB page or Twitter. I hope you rot in hell. ~Lisa B htttp://twitter.com/lisababick

She is an author who comes here to advertise her work. Anyone can google her.

Ralphie,
Your passive aggressive attempt to drag me into your juvenile back and forth is not going to succeed. However, your response to my question was predicable, no articulate response and a sarcastic closing comment. Have a wonderful New Years! You seemed to be taking a shot at me. I apologize if you weren't. Most experts seem to believe that the mafia in NY is doing well compared to other crime groups in the area. If you look at the latest indictments, you can see the difference. They are still involved in labor racketeering, gambling, loansharking, extortion, most of those traditional rackets. What has also helped them a lot lately is the fact that there's been fewer eyes on them since 9/11.

Law--whether prosecution or defense--is a competitive business: it's about who wins and who loses. Selwyn Raab, in "The Five Families," concluded that, after Rudy Giuliani successfully prosecuted the Commission case, US Attorneys around the country fell over themselves prosecuting Mafiosi under RICO so they could have their share of the glory. The FBI was right there with them, seeking glory. But, after 9/11, a lot of those resources were refocused on terrorists, which allowed the Mob to regroup.

I like how you emphasize REAL because there is a difference. Out of all of the dishes you've ever made...what is your favorite dish to make and what is your favorite dish to eat? What do you think about cold beet soup? Do you like RedFish and have you ever been to NOLA?
