I know this was posted somewhere, but i cant seem to find it. I was wondering what other people thought of this movie. I first read about it on this board.....and i went and bought it and thought it was pretty good. I come here to look for new books and movies that i havent heard of. This board has given me great suggestions. I have read the godfather, the sicilian, the family, omerta, the last don, and gangster. I am starting to watch more movies most recently Millers crossing. I hope to receive the last don dvd in the mail. I am receiving some of the older movies that most of you have mentioned. Which do you recommend watching first? I will receive The Roaring Twenties, Little Caesar, Angels With Dirty Faces, The Petrified Forest, and Public Enemy. Those are the ones i can think of and there are others. Does anyone know of any other good mafia stories that I can find. well enough rambling on. I just would like to thank everyone for promoting most of these books, because i really have enjoyed them.

VITO CORLEONE (to Johnny, after glancing to see Sonny enter)

You spend time with your family?

JOHNNY

Sure I do.

VITO CORLEONE (to Johnny, but toward and about Sonny)

Good. 'Cause a man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man.

YDV - It sounds like you bought the 6 DVD set of the old gangster movies from Warner Bros. If thats true I recommend watching "White Heat" first. Its James Cagney at his best.

What kind of books are you looking for? Fiction? Non-Fiction? There are many discussion threads on the boards that list some good books. Do a search under this forum to find those discussions.

Definitly White Heat first.

Have your dvd player drive OPEN as soon as the box comes and drop that one in. It is THE BEST in the set, and imo Angels with Dirty Faces is a VERY close 2nd.

My list on the 5 (haven't watched Petrified Forest yet) are:
1. White Heat
2. Angels with Dirty Faces
3. Roaring Twenties
4. Public Enemy (however I didn't like the ending)
5. Little Ceasar (once it seemed to be getting good it was over)

I'll add my vote for "White Heat."
"Miller's Crossing" is ok as far as it goes. It has a quirky Coen Brothers quality (but not as quirky as "Fargo," their best IMO). What I like most about "Miller's Crossing" is Jon Polito, in the one film role that made maximum use of his substantial talents. John Turturro also is good. And check out Albert Finney's 10,000-shot Tommygun--must have been designed by John Wu.

Miller's Crossing. I could take it or leave it.

Anyone who has seen White Heat has "finally made it to the top of the world!"

I personally was very disappointed with Millers crossing. It had absolutely no plot, and the ending was completely rediculous.
White Heat is in my player ready to go, just gotta find the time Goddamnit.

I liked Miller's Crossing. In fact, I ordered it from Amazon just the other day.

hah sorry kinda late but i didnt wanna start a new thread. i just finished it and i an not a really big plan. character are vague in the movie and sometimes you dont know who anyone is talking about. the plot gets really boring its more like a man's life/love story than it is about the mob. it really doesnt get that interesting.

Miller's Crossing is one of my very favorite films, and some Coen fans will frown upon the fact that I enjoy it more then Fargo, although that's a close one.

Fans of mob films will probably not find Miller's Crossing that great because it isn't like most other mob movies. It does have the underlying quirky Coen Brothers feel to it, as previously mentioned, and I think it could be more appreciated by a hardcore Coens fan rather then a hardcore mob fan.

One thing to especially note is the great, snappy dialouge between Gabriel Byrne and Marcia Gay Harden. They go on for at least 10 minutes at times with some of the most sarcastically funny and biting jabs at each other.

I also like how well Miller's Crossing develops it's very few characters. I mean you have only about 10 characters in the entire film with names, and they are each given a distinct personality with key scenes highlighting each of them. Definetly a film someone might need to watch more then once to truly appreciate.

The entire film is filled with snappy dialogue, and it's one of my all-time favorites.

My favorite lines:

Eddie Dane: Where's Leo?
Hitman at Verna's: If I tell you, how do I know you won't kill me?
Eddie Dane: Because if you told me and I killed you and you were lying I wouldn't get to kill you then.

Some great bits, just to highlight what I'm saying.

Leo O'Bannion: Oh, come on, Tommy. You know I don't like to think.
Tom Reagan: Yeah. Well, think about whether you should start.

Tom Reagan: I am awake.
Tad: Your eyes are shut.
Tom Reagan: Who you gonna believe?

Tom Reagan: If you want me to keep my mouth shut, it's gonna cost you some dough. I figure a thousand bucks is reasonable, so I want two.

Leo O'Bannion: You ain't got a license to kill bookies and today I ain't sellin'. So take your flunky and dangle.

Verna: Shouldn't you be doing your job?
Tom Reagan: Intimidating helpless women is my job.
Verna: Then go find one, and intimidate her.

Verna: Leo's got the right idea. I like him, he's honest and he's got a heart.
Tom Reagan: Then it's true what they say. Opposites attract.

Tom Reagan: All in all not a bad guy - if looks, brains and personality don't count.
Verna: You better hope they don't.

Classic stuff
