You should check out Shane Meadows' Dead Man's Shoes, which is out at the moment over here. I hear it's excellent. I saw Meadows' short film Northern Soul the other night; very wierd: a mix of personal comedic themes set in his hometown of Nottinghamshire, with disturbing undertones of violence never far away.
As for Layer Cake, I haven't seen it, and doubt I will be. It looks alright, but most British gangster films don't do anything original, instead pressing their noses right up against the glass door of Hollywood (why they want to do that I don't know). They consist of nothing more than profanity, clichés, stereotypes and repulsive storylines.
Check out Gangster No. 1 starring Paul Bettany (excellent) and Malcolm MacDowell (from A Clockwork Orange). By the way, it was made in 2000.
But I continue to recommend the fairly unknown [i]Sexy Beast, a superb directorial debut from Johnathan Glazer about obsessive behaviour; essentially, it's a love story disguised as a gangster film. Fantastic cast (Ray Winstone, Ian McShane, Amanda Redman, Edward Fox and the AMAZING Oscar-nominated Ben Kingsley) and terrific music from UNKLE. Check it out.
