Given the number of posts that have appeared here on "Carlito's Way," I don't think it's underrated.

My candidate for most underrated mobster/gangster flick is "Al Capone" with Rod Steiger in the title role. Many actors (including great ones like Paul Muni) have played Capone or Capone-like characters. But Steiger was the absolute best. His performance as Capone was, IMO, the finest in his long and brilliant career. The movie isn't much, but Steiger is spellbinding to watch.

I think De Niro played the best Al Capone by far.

The film The Rat Pack with Ray Liotta had a lot of Mob ties in it, and I find it extremely underrated and not ver well known.

Ya sing that was a good movie with Ray HENRY HILL 4 EVER Lliota.

An underrated mob movie me thinks is John Milius' 1973 B movie of an exploitation action movie is DILLINGER, coming from the same time as Roger Corman and AIP was pumping out all those 30's/40's-era gangster movies like BIG BAD MAMA and this movie.

Based of course on the legendary 30's bank robber, the movie is not really a biographic drama but more or less a drama-action-bio flick(like say 1994's TOMBSTONE)....but neverless quite enjoyable and fun, and having small but good acting by such folks as Harry Dean Stanton, Warren Oates, Richard Dreyfus(as Pretty Boy Floyd, a good 2 years before JAWS)........the coolest parts of the movie was when the lawman(Oates) smokes cigars over the corpses of all the FBI Most Wanted criminals hes been after.

From the script-writer of such movies as APOCALPYSE NOW and JEREMIAH JOHNSON, and the writer/director of flicks like CONAN THE BARBARIAN, RED DAWN(When Commies Invade America!), THE WIND & THE LION, etc....and the decent DVD for $6 at some grocery stores, its worth a rental or buy or whatever.

As I've posted before, I always thought that HBO's mob movie "GOTTI" was really good with a great job done by Both Assante and Quinn. I always felt that the movie was a bit underated because it was a made for cable movie and did not get the proper recognition that it deserved.
As you can see bt my avatar I am a bit biased .

Don Cardi cool

Five - ten years from now, they're gonna wish there was American Cosa Nostra. Five - ten years from now, they're gonna miss John Gotti.

^ As was the Rat Pack. I own Gotti too, and it was good. Assante looks a lot like Gotti, anyway.

I think one of the most underrated gangster flicks is The Boondock Saints. Now for those who have seen it they'll probably say that they love it (hopefully). But for those who haven't seen it, they have probably never heard of it. That's what gets my vote!

"The Pope of Greenwich Village"

Great film from the early 1980's with a great cast. Almost forgotton and never mentioned on this board. I would take this film over Scarface every day of the week.

man you gotta be kidding! "The Pope of Greenwich Village" is one of the worse acted films I have ever seeen, and let's stick to the acting. everytime someone asks me about the worst scene in movies history, I always remember that scene in this movie when the guys screams "MY THUMB!!!" is awful!

anyway, each one has got its own opinion, but I think an absurd to say this movie is better Scarface.

If that is true , you have been blessed with seeing only fine films. Your lucky because there are alot of bad films out there.

A Bronx Tale. So far no one has mentioned this one.

Great film directed by Robert Deniro..

I wouldn't say it's better than Scarface, or that it's even close, but I do think it's very good.

The scene with Geraldine Page (the dead cop's mother), sitting in her living room in a haze of her cigarette smoke, is priceless.

She was nominated for supporting actress for that role.

Also I always liked the line from the Irish safe cracker about how close Italian familys are.

"Italian cousins are closer then Irish twin Brothers" or something like that

Not sure if I'd say they were underrated, but not well known on your side of the water:

Sexy Beast
Gangster No. 1
The Long Good Friday
The Krays
(I don't like it, but a lot of others do)
