Yes, Connery's farewell to the role, though he would later do the unofficial remake of Thunderball called Never say Never Again (which should be avoided, by the way). For the year of release (1971) and considering it is the fifth in what was becoming a trend with big bangs and car chases, this includes the usual, but with also an element of nastiness and heavy undertones of homosexuality.

You asked about the book, Robert. I read it, and I thought it was far better than the movie. The book had a lot of Fifties New York and Nevada atmosphere, seen through Fleming's eyes--and he was a writer with great panache. The film was only so-so--definitely not one of Connery's best. BTW: The Spangled Mob is mentioned again in the novel version of "Goldfinger."
