I was just wondering if anyone has ever seen this movie. Because not that many people talk about it.

Great movie, but simplified and sanitized beyond belief.

I enjoyed watching it, I thought it was much more better than De Palma's other work Scarface. Great acting by Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and also Andy Garcia, and ofcourse Robert De Niro, he's fabulous as Capone! And Ennio Moricone made the soundtracks, so go out and rent it!

This is not a gangster film with raw, explicit violence like in Casino (or Scarface), nor a fair character drama from the neorealism that US Cinema struck late 60's/early 70's (like The Godfather), but a highly stylized telling of the way how Elliot Ness from the Treasure Department brought in Al Capone for trial (loosely based on true events).

Brian DePalma, known for using lots of classic cinematographical elements, makes it all look fantastic, and Connery's oscar proves the acting is not bad either (DeNiro a delight as always). Like MC14 said, add Morricone's music and you have a wonderfull result.

But it's not a gangster film the way you're used

I didn't like it. I don't like Connery in any rule save for Bond, and perhaps as Marko Ramius in The Hunt for Red October. His acting, and attempt at humour, makes me cringe to no end. For such a violent world and real-life plot, this film puts glamour first, and has no real care for hardcore gangster film fans.

I'd give it one star out of four.

I suggest watching it I wasn't disappointed when I first saw it.

I'd give it a 3 out of 4 stars.

i dont like it as much as other mob movies because a) the mob loses b) doesnt seem as realistic as the others i.e. pushing the guy off the roof, ness always winning, being right. i did like when they gunned down connery, but even that seemed a little drawn out. by the way wasnt andy garcia in that?

dePalma has a habit of making the good guys really good and the bad guys really bad. He's just old fashioned, but it works.

about the 'not looking realistic' thing, I had that at first too. until I understood DePalma was much more trying to make a stylish cinematic work instead of a raw, neorealistic gangster picture, true to the facts and everything. It's not that. Ask Omar: DePalma uses a lot of Hitchcock elements.

spoiler warning

The scene with the baby carriage in the train station is an hommage to the famous Odessa stairs scene in "Battleship Potyemkin" by Sergei Eisenstein (silent, black/white film from 1925) and is filmed in Hitchcock style, as well as the scene when Capone's men go to Sean Connery's house

I liked it. DeNiro is a very convincing Al Capone. The movie's best scene occurs when Costner & Garcia shoot it out with gangsters while a baby is falling down a staircase in its stroller.

I thought that it was just ok, De Niro did a great job as Capone, but I don't think that Kevin Costner was fit for this movie. Does anyone else agree? I just read this from http://www.digitalbits.com

You'll also be happy to know that we've confirmed with Paramount that special editions of The Untouchables, Top Gun, South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut and Titanic are on the studio's DVD production slate. Untouchables and Top Gun are planned for 2004, with Untouchables at least due early in the year. Don't expect Titanic before the end of 2004 at the earliest however. And yes, these will all feature anamorphic widescreen transfers.

As for the dvd info, I said that I read it from a website, and I just pasted it from there.

no, altough I do manage to watch between 10 and 20 movies each week nowadays..

I study "Film-science" and these exact examples where shown to us in college, so therefor I know.

Don't worry, I'm not a freak. Yet.

The Odessa-scene is/was known as the single most famous scene in movie history for it's historical value, mostly because of it's innovative and revolutionary techniques. Film study or no film study, interested as I am in movie (and by that, it's history) I would have find out about this scene sooner or later and would have made the comparision with Brian DePalma myself.

To comfort you, "Battleship Potyemkin" is truly a hard film to watch, since there is NO protagonist, it's a long black&white collage of scenes, the movie is over 75 years old and by today's standards lacks quality in almost every era. But it's historical (and legendary) and therefor we saw it at school.

I thought this movie had a great story, but the way the movie was made drove me up the wall! For example all the slow motion was really distracting, and I couldn't stand the music. I normally wouldn't recommend this movie, but there ARE a lot of people who like it so I'd say watch it and see for yourself.

As a DePalma film it is good for a work of fiction. Some of it was innacurate as I read that Eliott Ness never carried a gun. Also Frank Nitti took his own life and wasn't thrown off a roof by Ness. The Capone conviction was accurate.

Great movie. what i like most in the film was Robert DeNiro's performance as Al Capone.

I saw the movie a long time ago when I was a kid. I don't remember every detail, but I at the time I thoughtit was good. But a few months ago I heard the movie was historically inaccurate. But that is Hollywood.

That song is in the car commercial when they sneak up on that guy and water balloon him. That is one of the best commercials I've ever seen! Thet should give the guy who created it a raise.

Anyone else old enough to remember when the "Untouchables" was first shown on TV, with Robert Stack as Elliot Ness, Neville Brand as "Big Al, and Bruce Gordon as Frank Nitti? When it first came out it was a blockbuster TV show. I believe it was the first time that a gangster show or movie was made using real characters from history. Ironically it was produced by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz using their Desilu studios. Also using Walter Winchell as the narra tor, added to its realism.

I sure remember it. It was televised about the same time I started getting "into" mob stuff, and it became my favorite show. It wasn't historically accurate, but that didn't matter much to me at the time. Ahhh, the good old days.
