This post might be a little late but while AFI was honoring De Niro, I caught Casino on tv. It was my first time seeing it and I was wondering if there were any scenes that might of been cut out?

Well, you probably didn't know this, but Pesci narrates, and did you see SPOILERS nicky die?

You should rent or buy 'Casino.' They edit a lot of violence and, of course, language. That was one of the last great mob movies made. DeNiro was outstanding. Read the book too.

Goombah's right, Scarface. You should rent or buy it because "Casino" is so lengthy (3 hours) and so full of f-words, that it's a huge target for TV editing. Well worth the price, IMO. The book's swell, too.

I don't think it is. But I hate it when people say "Oh I liked the original Casino--it was called Goodfellas."

These movies are totally different. And each are great for many reasons. But I think Goodfellas had an overall better and fuller cast. Goodfellas by a bullet.

Casino is as good as Goodfellas, but the latter's more enjoyable IMO. Casino is an epic watch, and it hasn't got a distinct storyline, so seems to go on a lot longer. A tour de force of acting though, and the directing is top-notch, as always.

Scarface: Do you guys think its better than Goodfellas?

Scarface

Tough question and even tougher to answer. The movies have some similarities, but they are very different. Sure DeNiro & Pesci play tough guys in both, but the stories are distinct. I feel that "Casino" was certainly more brutal (vice scene, catching the cheaters, ending). I like both, but would give the edge to "Casino" because of DeNiro's character Ace - I guess I liked his character better than Jimmy the Gent. Both of the characters Pesci portrayed (arguably) got what was coming to them. Another fact that made "Casino" slightly better was the supporting cast: especially Don Rickles & James Woods. I liked "Goodfellas" very much, but I think Henry Hill is a complete slimeball.

BTW, I'm still hopeful the Gambino Family story with Gotti & Gravanno will make it to the big screen someday. How great would Pesci be playing Sammy the Bull?

Casino is well worth the money. Now hopefully they will do a Special Edition with a Pesci interview.

Sounds like a plan, Scarface! Can't go wrong with that one.
My opinion: "Casino" and "Goodfellas" are very different in approach--"Casino" is a long, detailed look at the casino business when the Mob was involved underground; "Goodfellas" is a fast-action, bang-bang look at minor Mob functionaries laced with mordant humor. I like both, but if I had to take one with me to the proverbial desert island, it'd be "Goodfellas."

The first time I watched Casino I thought that it was dull and draggy. However it was on network TV without the cursing. Once I watched it uncut I changed my mind. I am now to the point that I will watch it with or without the profanity.

Casino could be shown with forty minutes of unnecessary detail cut out and still be enjoyable, whereas Goodfellas could have forty minutes extra and it would be still enjoyable.

Well, at least you gave The Godfather priority! I have only watched Disc 1 so far, and the extras from the first movie. I don't know whether to watch Disc 1 again with the commentary or go onto Part II and III before going back to I with FFC's talking.

Whoever said they should make a movie about the Gotti/Gambino and Sammy Gravano story, there already is. Watch the movie "Gotti."

There is also a TV movie, "Witness to the Mob," in which Tom Sizemore plays Gotti.

Yes, and Sizemore was very good as Gotti. Nicholas Turturro was abysmal as Sammy Da Bull.

Glad you said that, Turnbull. I haven't read up on the Gotti story, but stil thought Sizemore's performance was great. I am in no position to comment on how Turtturo portayed Gravano; like I said, I haven't read up on this thing.

I saw both films, Mick, and one of the interesting things was that, in "Gotti," Armand Assante played Gotti as Armand Assante--an interesting performance, but far too intelligent, energetic, go-getting, for the real Gotti. He was just like his character in "The Mambo Kings." But the rest of the cast of "Gotti" was inspired: Anthony Quinn memorable as Neil Dellacroce, plus Richard D. Sarafian, Frank Vincent, Marc Lawrence, Vincent Pastore--all the guys we know and love. So I gave that film three stars out of five. In "Witness to the Mob," Tom Sizemore was, IMO, much more like the real-life Gotti: bombastic, egotistical, swaggering, dumb. A fine performance. The rest of the cast was ordinary and the film sucked. 1.5 stars.

I was referring to it. I thought that "Gotti" was either a made-for-tv or HBO-type movie. I meant I wish there was a Gambino-Gotti big screen movie with FFC or Martin Scorsese producing. If "Gotti" was released in theaters, it wasn't a big hit. I'm talking more about having big name actors and a big budget film.

I think it's a very interesting story - modern day Mafioso fixing three trials, a corrupt intelligence cop on the take, Gotti's lavious lifestyle, Gotti's personal tragedy of losing his son, and the FBI pursuing Gotti for nearly a decade. I also think Michael Moriarty (original D.A. from "Law & Order") would be perfect for the role of Bruce Mouw, the lead FBI investigator who put together the case against the Gambinos.
