Has anyone seen the Donnie Braco film with Al Pacino? I'm currently reading the book, which is pretty good by the way, and am considering whether or not I should check out the movie. I haven't heard much about it.

Sorry A.L., I scanned the first couple pages of threads on this board and the only threads I saw were a DB music thread and another with a spoiler warning (which I of course don't want). I know how angry folks get with newbies posting something everyone else had already discussed before. My apologies.

As Anthony said, it has been discussed before. My opinion, as before: It's a good movie with excellent performances all around. But it's not in a league with "Goodfellas," "Mean Streets" or some of the other great strictly-Mafia films. The book is far better.

its a very good movie but as Senor Turnbull said its not in the level of GoodFellas and Casino if i may add. i can watch GoodFellas and Casino always and Donnie Brasco not that much. Michael Madsen was perfect for the role of Sonnie Black. . .

I'm the opposite, I watch Donnie Brasco much more than I do GoodFellas or Casino.

what i like is the theme song of this movie entitled. "Donnie and Lefty" that song calms me down.

First I read the book, followed by the movie. It is very good b/c it's a true story. Al Pacino plays Lefty and does a great job. Not a big Johnny Depp fan in general, but he was good as Donnie Brasco. Definitely worth a rental.

Nice, glad to here it's good. Hopefully I'll enjoy. I'm going to have a lot of mob-time in the next week or so. I haven't even seen Goodfellas (saw Casino though), so I'll be watching it and Donnie Brasco this weekend.

I'll probably be renting the first season of The Sopranos next week. I don't even get HBO.

I've got to finish Donnie Brasco (the book) by Saturday though.

Post once you see Goodfellas. I know I'll take some flak for this, but based on the shows I've seen, I'm not a big Sopranos fan. I've only seen 3-4, but the show didn't grab me like Casino, Goodfellas, & Godfather. I'll tell you what, even though it's not a 'mob' movie, check out "Heat." Pacino & DeNiro give solid performances. Not a classic, but much better than 90% of the movies that are released nowadays.

All the performances are acted out brilliantly, the movie is just oustanding. Loved it... The DVD is worth the buy, also.

The movie is great, but as what's already been said here. The book is by far better. I'm glad I read the book afterwards, putting faces to the names really helped and it made me appreciate the film more as Pacino and Madson worked great as Lefty and Sonny.
