I thought the movie was AWESOME. I got it for Christmas on DVD and watched it right away. I thought both Pacino and Depp turned out grade A performances... 'Specially Al Pacino. His acting was so emotional and well acted out. He was at his peak in the film in the scene where he receives the call that he's about to be whacked. 8.5/10 What did you guys think?

It was excellent. One of the things I really enjoy in mob films are the supporting roles, and the actors and actresses who fill them. They were all terrific here, especially Sonny Black.

But I was unable to find Johnny Depp believable as an FBI agent. Even though he was undercover, he just didn't look the part. And he certainly didn't look Italian.

I saw the movie as well and thought it was great. I read the book and was surprised to find that the Al Pacino character wasn't killed. Lefty is in prison. Sonny Black was the one who got whacked.

Oh I loved it. These are strictly blue collar wiseguys. We don't see millions of dollars floating around as in GF, Goodfellas or Casino. These guys knock off parking meters, and will do hits for a measy few hundred dollars.

DB shows us that not all made guys are well off.

Deathkiss,

You are so right. That's part of the reason I liked the movie so much. This was a portrayal of a whole different level of organized crime. Pacino's performance was so poignant and pitiful. He was amazing as the wiseguy who'd been around forever and could never seem to move up in ranks. I thought Johnny Depp was very good too. I never would have thought him to play that sort of part but I think he pulled it off. Overshadowed by Pacino, but hey, that was expected.

Yeah. In the movie, he said if your "sent for" that your gonna be clipped by your best friend. And the name of the scene where he dies is called "sent for". I didnt know he died at first cause they didnt show it but then i noticed that he left all his valueables at home. He left outside and then you hear a gunshot and it cuts to "Donnie" shooting target practice.

One thing that made me think. Remember in Goodfellas when Henry goes "In order to become a member of a crew, you have to be 100 % italian and they must be able to trace all your relatives back to the old country" or something like that.
Plus it took like 30 years for Tommy to almost get made.

But here, Donnie gets so quick...

If you mean "made" so quick, I don't think that ever happened. He was nothing more than an "associate:", if I'm not mistaken

No Doubt, Donnie Brasco's a very good film. It opened current gangsters eyes to 'fugazy' and still poses the BIG question: What's the better car, Cadillac or Lincoln?????

No, right at the end before it all goes down the drain, Donnie was about to be made... Never did, though... But was going to.

It's a great movie, especially Pacino's performance. In The Godfather 1&2 he plays "The Prince" and in Brasco he plays "The Pauper". Great stretch within a genre.

I think the same EXACT thing. He plays mobsters in both, but in completely different ranks... And he does an excellent job in both.

It was good, i'm pretty sure my favorite scene is where they both give money to each other for christmas but pacino takes most of it back.

The character Al played was a little bent. the real Lefty was fancy and neatly combed his hair unlike the Lefty Pacino played.

Michael Madsen played good in supporting role. his face and built are fit for a gangster role, i first saw him in Reservoir Dogs and find him convincing in acting like a Gangsta.

Don't spell gangster "gansta", bro! It makes you look like a hommie!

I also loved Michael Madsen role and thought he played it perfectly and billiantly... To the T!

Very nice analogy, BK!
I liked the movie, but the book was much better because it had more detail. Also, in the movie, Lefty looks like a bumbling jerk and loser, but "Brasco" has lots of affection for him. In the book, it's the reverse: Lefty is a decent earner, has clout in the family (he saves "Brasco" from being "claimed" by another made man), and is respected by the family hierarchy. But "Brasco" can't stand Lefty--thinks he's a whiner and a cheapskate. The book "Brasco" had the most respect for Sonny Black.

I agree. I think the most poignant scene is when Lefty had his heart set on opening up a club in Florida. It was to be his 'big break'. Then the carpet was swept from under him by a middle-level wise guy.

This is another movie i need to see again. <...putting it on my list>
