This isn't exactly a gangster film, but I thought I'd write about it anyway. This was Francis Ford Coppola's other film of 1974, alongside The Godfather Part II. It stares Gene Hackman as a proffesional eavesdropper who becomes convinced that a couple are about to be murdered. It also stares John Cazal, Harrison Ford, Teri Garr and Robert Duval.
I saw it for the first time the other night and it scared the hell out of me. It's brilliantly atmospheric, using a wide aray of cinematographical techniques to explor the depth of Hackman's obssesion. This is a film which should be seen by everyone.
"Tom, you know you surprise me. If anything in this life is certain, if history has taught us anything, it's that you can kill anyone."

A masterpiece! A filmmaker's film. Won the highest award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Great film noir.
Its editing is flawless. Especially, when the "revelation" is happening...all the cutting between scenes and sound editing.
Perhaps director's technique-wise it was FFC's best picture. But, GF&GF2 are his best films.

It's a shame that a thread on a masterpiece, the Conversation, gets only 5 replies. That again shows that not many people heard about/know about/seen it.
Though, it is the type of movie that will fly over most people's heads...well, to very "casual" movie watchers.

"Now listen: I want somebody good -- and I mean very good -- to plant that gun. I don't want my brother coming out of that toilet with just his dick in his hands, alright?"
