There is a film I see named straight after Scarface himself. It was on last night and I unfortunately missed it. Made in the late 50's I think but it sounded good and Rod Steigers performance was supposed to be memorable.

I wondered if anyone has seen this film and how they rate it. Should I watch it if it repeats?

Isn't the Rod Steiger Scarface the one the Tony Montana Scarface is based on?

Al Pacinos Scarface is based on Paul Muni's (1932). Rod Steiger's is titled Al Capone. i saw his interview in discovery channel about the mobsters, but don't have any idea on the movie . . .

Turi, the "Al Capone" you refer to stars Rod Steiger in the title role (1959). The movie is little better than a "B" (and takes unfortunate liberties with history). But Steiger's performance is unforgettable. He's easily the best movie Capone ever--imhop, his best performance ever. Some of the other cast members (Fay Spain, Nehemiah Persoff, Martin Landau) also are good. Well worth watching once.

It's been a while since I've seen it, Turi, but I believe Turnbull is on the money. It was overly "Hollywooded" in parts, but Steiger is undoubtedly top notch...and, yeah, the best Capone I've ever seen.

Cheers guys, i'll look out for it. I managed to flick over to it a couple of times and it looked pretty good. It was the part with all the cops doing a "bust" on liquor, I knew exactly how that scene would turn out. But i've got to wait for it to show the full thing next.
