"Gangs of New York" looks like a very good movie to watch, but i have no clue what the whole story's about. So here's my question: What's it about? If any of you know what the inside scoop is....

All i know is that there's an Italian gang and an Irish gang in the early 1900's of New York starring Leonardo DiCaprio (*gag* not too fond of him) and Cameron Diaz.

You know more than I do.

I guess it's the post-Castellamree war that Vito Corleone/Irish in the GF Novel was baded on.

Premise: Set in the period from 1846 to 1863, this is the story of how Irish and Italian gangs (and subsequently, the Mafia) got started in New York City in that time of Tammany Hall and Boss Tweed. The two gangs at the heart of this film are the Dead Rabbits and the Native Americans. Amsterdam Vallon (DiCaprio) is the son of the Rabbits' murdered leader, and he vows vengeance on the man who killed him, Bill "The Butcher" Poole. (Cameron Diaz plays a thief that falls in love with Vallon; Daniel Day-Lewis is in talks to play Bill the Butcher; Neeson plays DiCaprio's father; Gleeson plays an Irish mercenary)

I have not read the book 'Gangs of NY' yet, still looking for a cheap copy. From what I have read I gather that there were dozens of these street gangs in existance many having hundreds of members. It's a wonder anyone could survive a walk to the corner in NY at the time.

There's a "Gangs of New York" book?? Hmmmm....maybe i should pick that up before i get the other books i have on my list. Is it going to be like the movie (considering it's not out yet, does it have the same theme as the book)? If it is, then that'll be the first book i ever read before watching the movie.

Yes, the book was first published in 1928, written by Herbert Asbury. Recently reissued in paperback. It probably has very little to do with the movie. The book is a history of all the gangs whereas the film will be a story focusing on a few probably fictional charicters. Oh yes, and their obligatory love interests. Just as they managed to turn the sinking of the Titanic into a love story with Leonardo, they will probably do something similar with Gangs.

First of all, i think having opposite lovers is so overrated. Second, if it does turn into more of a love story than what the title says, then i'll just wait until it comes out on cable (it also saves me time and money). And third, let's just say i'm not one of Leo's biggest fans.

Hahaha. I saw that movie ("What's eating Gilbert Grape?") like a few weeks ago and i thought Leo played a great mentally challenged person =) The falling in love with a water tower line was funny. Haha.
