Well I haven't read The Family at all yet, I saw it at SafeWay, but I didn't buy it. How is it so far?

for the first three chapters it was a great read and some of the members who finished reading it said its a good book. i still don't have the urge to continue the read so i started reading the Casino by Nicholas Pileggi.
ps> sorry for the late reply.

The family was a great novel, but how could it beat The Godfather?

Going into reading The Godfather I already loved the movie.

I believed The Family would be about the Mafia, for their reference to calling it "The Family".

In my opinion everyone should read it. Goodfella, I remember stopping at chapter 3, I started reading it again and it finally got better.

I guess you don't know how to read? Maybe that's why you loathe the novels.

The Godfather definitely. Like some of you, I read a few chapters of The Family and just couldn't get into it.
