US actor Glenn Ford has died aged 90, at his home in Beverly Hills.

The actor, who appeared in hits like Gilda, The Big Heat and Midway, was found dead by paramedics. He had suffered a number of strokes.

Born in Canada, he had moved to California as a child, and joined Colombia Pictures in 1939.

In a 53-year Hollywood career, he featured in more than 100 films from romance to comedy, often portraying the tough, introspective hero.

Early in his career he turned out a film every five days from Colombia Pictures' B-unit.

Ford appeared with Henry Fonda (l) and Robert Mitchum (r) in Midway. Service in the marines during World War II interrupted his fledgling career, but only briefly.

He went on to become a leading Hollywood star and formed an electric on-screen partnership with Rita Hayworth, which lasted for six films.

An action man both on and off screen, he later took up hang-gliding at the age of 64 and got married for the fourth time at 76.

A wonderful character actor. Rest in peace.

I'll always remember Ford as the teacher in "Blackboard Jungle", a movie that by today's standards is dated but was "radical" for its time.

If you youngins haven't ever seen it watch it just to see early roles by Sidney Poitier, Vic Morrow and Jamie Farr (yep, a very young "Klinger").

Too bad.

I too remember The Blackboard Jungle. Never saw it in the theaters, but years later. I remember how popular and, as you say, how "radical" it was for it's time. They hardly ever play it on tv do they?

For some reason , I remember a movie Ford made with Debbie Reynolds, but can't think of the name of it.

We actually just started Blackboard Jungle in my film class, and I'm enjoying his work so far. Coincidence I guess.

Don't forget Ford in "The Big Heat". One of the toughest roles in all of film history.

RIP Glenn.
