One of the greatest strengths of the Trilogy is FFC's fanatical attention to detail--nowhere more evident than the cars he selected. Here are some (most) in GF:
The Don's limo is a '38 Cad. Woltz's car is a '40 Cad (a '37 Cord Westchester ragtop is visible in his driveway). Sollozzo drives a '40 Cad. Michael pulls up to the compound in what looks like a '41 Plymouth ragtop. Clemenza has a '46 Cad. In Sicily, Don Tomassino has a '36 Fiat, while Michael drives around in a '43 Alfa Romeo 6C2500. Sonny gets whacked in his '41 Lincoln Connie. Michael renews his courtship of Kay in his ’47 Cad. A ’47 Ford woody wagon is visible in that scene. In Vegas, Michael is driven to his hotel in a ’54 Chrysler Imperial limo. Back home, Michael pulls into the compound in his big ’54 Packard Patrician, preceded by a ’52 Buick. Barely visible behind the Packard is a ’54 DeSoto Firedome. At Vito's burial, we see ’52-’56 Cads and Packards visible. Barzini's car is a '55 Cad Series 75 limo. Clemenza makes a last buff of his ’55 Cad Series 62 before dispatching Stracci in the elevator. Carlo meets his end in what appears to be a '51 Plymouth Cambridge. You can see a red '55 Mercury Montclair parked in the background as the Plymouth moves forward.
The cars in GFII are even more authentic.

There it is......I asked the same question about a
month ago lol

Car production stopped during the war so that the companys could build planes, tanks and jeeps for the war effort.

I am 99.999% sure that Barzinis car is NOT a series 75 limo. I am quite sure it is a '55 series 60 Fleetwood Sixty Special Four Door Sedan. The most distinguisable sign is the presence of the vertical chrome louvers at the ends of the rear fenders.

What I quoted was from another thread when I believe it was turnbull who wrote it. I personally know NOTHING about cars especially old cars or characteristics of them. I was interested in what car Sonny was driving as that is the one I liked. So I'm not dodging your question or saying its right/wrong it was someone else who wrote it.

Johnny Ola was right: Barzini's Cad was a '56.

Let me first state, that when it comes to identifying cars, Turnbull is tops, hands down! I have a interest in old cars, specifically Cadillacs. The Cadillac in the picture is a 1955 Cadillac Fleetwood Sixty Special Four Door Sedan, not a Series 75 Sedan or Limousine. *Note* Series 75's came both in a Sedan and a Limousine, the difference being the Limousine had the divider window, and the Sedans didn't.

The giveaway is the vertical chrome louvers at the end of the rear fender. Only the Fleetwood Sixty Specials had them. 1954 they were on the bottom of the rear doors. In 1956 the exhaust ports were oval instead of round.

I always thought the scene showing the rear of the Cadillac during Barazinis hit, was really a work of art. FFC used all the elements of a 50's mobster. A well dressed boss and his long black Cadillac. cool

That picture brings me to a question. I haven't read the book yet because I'm in school and have enough reading to do right now lol

but....when Al was shooting Barzini he is dressed in his police uniform. was he still a cop at that point or was he just wearing the uniform?

He was just wearing a cop's uniform. The film never went into his background, which was too bad, because the story of his reputation as a cop, his demise, and his resurrection by Michael is one of the best parts of the novel.

Yes, another great example of FFC's fanatical attention to detail. But the car I really love is in the scene when Michael returns to Tahoe after Havana. He's driven through the gate in the rarest car in GFII: a '58 Chrysler Imperial Crown Ghia limo, one of fewer than a dozen built by Ghia of Milan, Italy--at $13k, the most expensive US car of that era. Where FFC found it, I'll never know. And it's only on screen for 10 seconds. That's not the only Imperial: when Michael visits Fredo in Vegas for the Moe Green powwow, he shows up in a '54 Crown Imperial limo, one of only 23 built that year. At $7k, it cost nearly a grand more than a Cad Fleetwood 75 limo. Any movie director or production chief can find vintage Cads, but trust FFC to work harder.

Thanks again to Turnbull on educating me on the difference between a Chysler and a Imperial. wink

This is truly a magnificent automobile!
