My dad and I had a discussion on satire and The Wizard of Oz. He told me about a friend he once had that told him about different satirical events that occured within the novel/movie. This has nothing to do with my father's or my opinion on the novel/movie, I just want to see your reactions, thoughts, or ideas. Here they are:
-Dorothy and her trip to Emerald City symbolizes a feminist going to D.C. for sufferage.(Emerald City is the capital of Oz) -Toto symbolizes the Teetotalers, or prohibitionists, of the time. -The scarecrow without a brain symbolizes the farmers without an education. -The lion without courage symbolizes Grover Cleveland. -The Tin Man without a heart symbolizes the industry
There was a part he could not competely recall. Here it is:
In the novel, Dorothy wore silver slippers.
Silver slippers = silver yellow brick road = gold Oz = abbreviation of ounce
There also had something to do with the witches, but that is all I have.
I would love some feedback on this, it seems very interesting.

Can I get a quarter ounce of whatever you're smoking?
I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! lol Whaddaya want me to do? Whack a guy? Off a guy? Whack off a guy? --Peter Griffin My DVDs | Facebook | Godfather Filming Locations

I haven't read it since I was a kid, but I remember hearing something of the sort of it at some point in the past few years, and looking back at it, it made sense.
"Somebody told me when the bomb hits, everybody in a two mile radius will be instantly sublimated, but if you lay face down on the ground for some time, avoiding the residual ripples of heat, you might survive, permanently fucked up and twisted like you're always underwater refracted. But if you do go gas, there's nothing you can do if the air that was once you is mingled and mashed with the kicked up molecules of the enemy's former body. Big-kid-tested, motherf--ker approved."

Perhaps we should find out more about the author himself, how The Wonderful Wizard of Oz came to be, and what his intent for the story was. http://www.literarytraveler.com/literary_articles/l_frank_baum.aspx Apple
A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government.

The two links were great, and the populism theory makes sense. But what did the flying monkeys symbolize?
