Of the ones you have mentioned Don V. and mind you I have not seen many of them, I would say that Last Days, No Direction Home: Bob Dylan, Syriana, Jarhead, Crash, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Kingdom Of Heaven, Sin City, Wedding Crashers, Star Wars III: Revenge Of The Sith, Four Brothers and The Interpreter were the best movies of 2005. Out of all the movies made in 2005 (imo) the best of the lot was Syriana.

Don V, did you purposely avoid seeing Brokeback?

I dream in widescreen.

I did. Because it looks like the same old Oscar bait shit.

I avoid BROKEBACK because I've never been impressed with Ang Lee, and I'm in no rush to see it. On the other hand, I would dig to see CAPOTE, and NEW WORLD.

I am in no rush to see Capote or Brokeback Mountain, though I definitely will. I am in a rush to see The New World and Munich.

Updated with the horrible Flightplan.

I'll be seeing Munich Tuesday, and unfortunately The New World has been taken off theaters near me.

DV, Flight Plan with Jodie Foster right??? The previews looked good. Come to think about it though, it did seem to disappear suddently. No good hu?

Yeah, that one. It's a predictable thriller with a twist that fails to be memorable, with the addition of having at least one major plot hole.

I've finally come up with a satisfied top 10. Looking at it, it seems like this wasn't such a bad year for film after all.

1. A History of Violence (David Cronenberg)
2. Match Point (Woody Allen)
3. Syriana (Stephen Gaghan)
4. The New World (Terrence Malick)
5. The Squid and the Whale (Noah Baumbach)
6. Broken Flowers (Jim Jarmusch)
7. Capote (Bennett Miller)
8. Crash (Paul Haggis)
9. Last Days (Gus Van Sant)
10. Jarhead (Sam Mendes)

What did you guys think of Walk the Line? I noticed that wasn't mentioned in any of the previous lists, and I enjoyed this movie very much.

There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.

Personally, I thought it was kind of average. It seemed like all the cliches for films of that genre were present throughout. I was disappointed.

I haven't watched any of the 2005 movies you listed yet but "Brokeback Mountain". Believe me, folks, this is one of the most lyrical, intense, beautiful love story I've ever seen on screen. I do hope that none of you will be biased because of the gay issue. It'd be such a stupid thing to do. This movie is about love that happens to be between two men. An impossible love because of social pressures and personal fears. A movie about lost chances and the tragic solitude of surviving instead of living. Outstandingly well acted by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhall, I hope they both are going to be given an Oscar. Great scenarios. Touching music score. I'm absolutely in love with this movie. I read the short novel too. But the movie is much better. Please, go watch it and then give your comment.

I don't want realism. I want magic! Yes, yes, magic. I try to give that to people. I do misrepresent things. I don't tell the truth. I tell what ought to be truth (Blanche/A streetcar named desire)

Completely agreed.

I feel like at this point its being biased less because of the gay aspect of it and more because its the favorite on Oscar night, although it may be a combination of both.

My list of best movies of 2005, in no order:
Munich (possibly the best)
Jarhead
Capote
Brokeback Mountain
New World
Match Point
The Constant Gardener
Caché
