Rockerfeller Plaza's Christmas Tree lighting is always nice.

I suppose its something that you should do once in your lifetime, but its something of a bust (for me). You get together with a LARGE crowd of people in a small area to see lights go on a tree? I always have to laugh when I see the ceremony on tv news and the second that the tree is lit a thousand flashbulbs go off. Everyone thinks they're gonna get that perfect photograph, but you're a few hundred yards away and all you're gonna get is a picture of a tiny little tree that probably has the head of the guy in front of you in it.

You'd be better off going at midnight (when the crowds are much smaller) and you'll be able to walk right up to the skating rink and get your photos and views of the tree in peace.

Anyway, Meggie, if you're first leaving work at 8:00 you'll be lucky to see the tree at all (and that'll probably be from one of the side streets). But, if you go, enjoy it!!

Why did channel 2 have to show Rudolph tonight at the same time of the tree lighting ceremony on channel 4? It screwed me all up. I wanted to watch them both.

DS

I woke up this morning with nothing to do and went to bed with only half of it done.

Rockefeller Center is worth visiting for far mor than the tree lighting:
It is one of the triumphs of New York--a brilliant example of late Art Deco architecture and design, as well as great use of limited space. If you're going to see the tree lighting, take a walk through the lobbies and underground passages of 30 Rockefeller Plaza--it's as if they sealed the doors in 1933. They are just the most sensational public places in New York. And check out the murals in the lobby. There is a great, great story about how they got there, and who painted them.

I've been to Rockafella once. It was nice and I imagine would be a real nice place to visit at Christmas time. It was on a class trip to the Big Apple. I hope to go again. In fact, I'm planning on living there after college.

SC, I go every year, I work at Macy's so I just get on the train and I'm there in time. Although it was very crowded (and cold) but we always have fun. Then we gohang out in Tribecca. It's fun! I was sad to our fav spot, Pico's had closed.
Maybe I can get you to hang out with us on New Year's Eve at Times Square (I never miss it)!

I spent New Years in NYC once, but in the Village, not anywhere near Times Square. And, the way the trains were jampacked DOWNTOWN after midnight (they were so crowded, my feet barely touched the floor!!), I really doubt I could put up with the Times Square crowd!!! This, coming from someone who stood amongst like a million people in 2 Yankees World Series parades!!

We ususally go to Rockafella Center around Christmas time every year. It's become almost a yearly tradition where 4 couples, including my wife and I, go out to dinner at Sparks and then take a limo over to Rockafella Center. It's a great time.

I always wanted to see Time's Square on New Year's Ever, but it's too damn cold. Do they sell hot coffee or hot chocolate or something to warm your inners? And, how early do people actually get there? Just wondering.

Good thing I finished my term paper last night... if I still had to do it tonight, I'd probably sit and watch that video of the tree for like 4 hours instead, just to avoid the homework.

I thought it was Rock'a'fella. I used to work in midtown (42nd and 6th) and would occasionally take noon-timewalks up to the tree. The entire area is very festive. Lights on the trees and buildings. The store windows, St. Pats. But...a real tourist attraction.

Every year for Christmas our family tradition is to go to a Broadway show and dinner. This year we are going to see "Fiddler on the Roof." How's that for a little Christian irony; a show about Jews, with the leads played by a gay (Harvey Firestein) and a lesbian (Rosie O'Donnell) who are husband and wife in the show. Good thing I'm a liberal Catholic (is there such a thing?)
Oy Vay, Merry Christmas!

Big deal! I don't see why my location should be dishonored due to the fact I misspelled Rockefeller.

I didn't dis your location -- it was a joke, how "Rockafella" sounds like a New Yawk accent. And since you're not from New York, I was questioning your accent........ Get it?

I understand, Geoff. We cool.

I think I'm a NY'er at heart, along with Italian.

SC,,,you are so silly! I know how to spell it. Look at my original post (not the Subject...just spelled it that way for fun in honor of Jay-Z (?) Really, I was just poking fun. But us New Yorkers do pronounce it that way.
