I have a phobia about clowns. They really and truly frighten me. I truly start to panic if one comes over to me at a carnival or something. My husband took the kids to see Cirque de Soleil when we were in Orlando on vacation. I had to pass, and stayed at the hotel. My local shoe store had a clown statue outside the door, and my kids would yell and shout at me about it when we drove past (Hey, Mom, don't look now, but there's a CLOWN outside of Marty's shoes!). My kids think this is extremely funny, and I hear them whispering to their friends (My Mom's scared of clowns!) and giggling about it.

I just wanted to know if there are others out there that share this clown-o-phobia.

Hey, SB! Well, I guess I'd go into the hate category, but it's more so that I'm just uncomfortable around clowns than that I'm afraid of them. I've always been quite a shy person, but I was especially when I was younger. I can always remember not wanting to talk to or go near any clowns at parties, festivals, and such, because I was always intimidated by their outgoing personalities... I even have a picture that my mom took of me with Ronald McDonald at my birthday party when I was very little, and you can just see by my face and how I'm leaning away from him that I was not happy.

But, in response to DV's picture, I do love the movie, It! Go figure...

DV, Is that Pennywise?? God, that book scared the hell out of me!! I've never been able to watch the whole movie. We all float!!

Oh, Gina, I wish it were just discomfort. If my mother had a clown at one of my parties, I think I would have been screaming my head off. I think it's that you can't see behind the makeup. Ever since I read that John Wayne Gacy used to dress as a clown and was famous for his clown paintings, I believe that he is the realization of all my fears. Who is truly under that makeup??

SB the thing that really freaks ME out is GHOSTS and ANYTHING SUPERNATURAL

When I was 14 I was doing a job with my father in a house that a person had died in and SOMEHOW the phone kept ringing even though it wasn't plugged in (at least it didn't appear plugged in to me the little I saw of it) and I RAN out of that house lol you wouldn't have been able to pay me to go back in there.

I've always hated clowns. My mom has said that I was never afraid of them I just plain didn't like them/or think they were funny.

I agree with Iceman. I remember seeing clowns at the circus and such and they were okay, but I wasn't especially interested in seeing them.
I can't say they scare me, although, Pennywise was very freaky. I liked the movie though.

When my kids were young they saw Poltergeist and they got scared of the part where the clown doll grabs the boy and pulls him under the bed. They both say, to this day, that's why they don't like clowns. Then when they saw "It" that topped the Poltergeist clown.

I also agree with DMC. Supernatural type movies, although I love to watch them, scare me more than any other scary movie.

First of all, I don't like circus. Most of all I hate all shows were they use animals. And, of course, I never enjoyed clowns either. Basically I've always found clowns' shows to be stupid and boring. Even when I was a child. And then there's something disturbing in them. Can't really tell you what, but there certainly is something that make me feel uncomfortable.... Nice to see so many of you feeling the same...

I remember a kids' shop in my place where men hide under a large stuffed animal figure and dance around to attract kids to their shop. I used to particularly like the stuffed Giraffe. I am not fond of clowns as they appear in circus though, with the funny red nose and things like that. I don't hat them either.

Anybody ever here of the pedophile John Wayne Gacy? He happened to be a clown. You can read about him on http://www.crimelibrary.com or see the B movie about him.

I'm not scared of clowns, but I'm annoyed by them. They just act like such idiots, with their doofus smiles and their uneven walking and their big red noses. I'm not a fan. Plus with their dirty cheap synthetic costumes and cakey makeup, you couldn't pay me to touch one of them. There's one in Santa Monica on the pier on Friday nights, and he's always trying to shake my hand or put his arm around me. Gross, I wouldn't touch him if he was trying to save my life. :p

I never minded clowns until that one in the Stephen King story (the one pictured in Don Vercetti's post). I guess that's 'Pennywise'.

However...grew up ADORING Bozo the Clown, and Ronald McDonald was kind've a blast, too!!

There's a really sweet clown played by Jimmy Stewart in
'The Greatest Show on Earth' (Best Picutre, 1952). He was actually a doctor who had euthanized his terminally ill wife...and joined the circus to run from the law. Never removed his makeup in public so as to avoid being recognized by police. Good story.

I'm too young to remember Clarabell from Howdy Doody but I hear all the 50's kids loved him (right TIS???).

Except here's my all time FAVORITE clown....

Where did the word "Clown" come from? I always thought Emmit Kelly was a stupid clown; that sad face. More pathetic than funny. The clowns at the rodeo are probably the best; a bit a daring-do, no bull.

Actually, MC, there's an interesting story about his sad face. Not sure if you're familiar with the famous Hartford, CT circus fire of 1944, but it seems that they had waterproofed the tent with a paraffin thinned with gasoline. Naturally, it caught fire (there was a story about arson, but I don't know if it was ever proved). Many people died (mostly children), a number of them trampled to death (one little girl known as Little Miss Nobody wasn't identified until a few years ago). Anyway, Emmett Kelly painted that tear on his face in memory of the victims of the fire.
