Nicolas Cage gives Superman\'s birth name to son

Mon Oct 3, 7:39 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage's wife of 14 months gave birth on Monday to the couple's first child together, a son they named Kal-el -- a moniker recognized by comic book fans as the birth name of Superman.

The child's delivery in New York City and his full name, Kal-el Coppola Cage, were confirmed by the actor's publicist, Annett Wolf, who said of the family, "They are healthy and happy and it's quite lovely."

No further details were released, including how the actor and his wife, Alice Kim Cage, were inspired to borrow from the mythology of Superman in naming their child.

Cage is known as an avid comic book devotee who once sold his personal collection, including a copy of Superman's 1938 pulp debut, at auction for more than $1.6 million.

The nephew of famed filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, the actor adopted his own stage surname from the Marvel Comics superhero Luke Cage.

Cage also was at one time slated to star in a Superman movie under the direction of Tim Burton, a project that ultimately was scrapped and replaced by a newer Warner Bros. remake expected for release next summer.

The 41-year-old actor and his wife, a former sushi waitress about 20 years his junior, met at a nightclub last year before marrying on July 30, 2004.

Cage has a 15-year-old son, Weston, by a prior relationship with actress Kristina Fulton. His previous marriages to actress Patricia Arquette and singer Lisa Marie Presley ended in divorce. Kal-el is his current wife's first child.

The prolific performer won an Academy Award as best actor for his 1995 role as an alcoholic bent on suicide in "Leaving Las Vegas." In his latest film, "Lord of War," he portrays an arms dealer.

Remember, poor people are crazy. Rich people are eccentric!

Anyway, I actually think the name has a ring to it: KAL-EL COPPOLA CAGE.

Of course, JOR-EL( ) sounds much cooler, but that is just me.

Besides, KAL-EL is cool compared to some stupid celebrity names out there.....APPLE/MOON UNIT anyone?

Nevermind what the call the bleeding kid shouldn't the fact that Nic Cage is giving birth be of primary concern here, JG?

What everyone is missing here is the obvious Godfather connection. Kal el (aka Superman) is the son of Jor El, played by Marlon Brando, who also played Vito Corleone.

The most shocking thing for me is the fact that I have a cousin by the same name ! Me uncle was a big Superman fan. He named his first son Jor-El.

That ain't nothing compared to some celbrities who have called their children "Apple" or "Pilot Inspektor" (that one sounds like the name of an evil, machiavellian Nazi officer with a monocle)

Almost as stupid as Coutney Cox and David Arquette's "Coco". Stupid names!

To quote from George Carlin: "where are all these goofy fuckin names coming from?"

I think what everyone's missing is that according to the title Nic Cage, not his wife was the one who had the baby

What about Bob Geldof's daughters:

Peaches, Fifi and Pixie

Which leads to the old joke...The police raid Bob Geldof's house and say they're looking of marijuana and cannabis resin. Bob replies "They're not home from school yet!" Boom Boom

Tom: "They shot Sonny on the causeway...he's dead."
Michael: "Turnbull is a good man"
Shane MacGowan: "It was Christmas Eve babe, in the drunk tank"

"My name it is nothing,
My age it means less."

Well said, Bob (so why change your surname from Zimmermann to Dylan?).

Or, to quote Butch Coolidge, "This is America, honey, names mean shit."

I'd love to ask Nic what hurts more: a kick in the balls, or giving birth? :p

Strange name alright! :p One of the strangest names I've heard is Frank Zappa's daughter, Moon Unit and his son Dewezel (sp) . At my school we've had a student with the first name of Mister, and worse yet, a boy who's name was Pretty Boyd Jr. Don't know what some people are thinking. :p

What about Michael Jackson with Prince 1 and 2, I think Prince 2's nickname is blanket.

There's always Eddie Van Halen and Valerie Bertinelli's son Wolfgang. What's wrong with Joe, Dave and Tom?

If I'm going to have children, God knows the mother would not want to name them after a comic book character. I think it's retarded to name your children some goofy names, unless they're on a level of decency. I can see naming your dog Kal-El or whatever, but not someone in your family. I really don't care what people do, I just think it's retarded.

You know, we always called each other good fellas. Like you said to, uh, somebody, :You're gonna like this guy. He's all right. He's a good fella. He's one of us.: You understand? We were good fellas.

LaFamigla sorry if I spelt your name wrong but I agree with you there it is absolutely ridiculous he could've at least called his child after a historic person or a real life hero not a comic book character or something like all in all ye I agree with you Lafamigla (apologise again if i spelt it wrong)

Wolfgang is nice. Slightly mozartian and nice. You got to have personality to be called Wolfgang, though.
