Recently me and a friend argued about certain religious references that were in the Matrix trilogy. We both feel that there are definetly similarities between the bible and the Matrix, but we have conflicting interpretations. Do you guys feel that the devil is represented through the architect or the Merovingian? Do you feel that the Oracle represents god? I wont tell you what I think till later.

I think Neo is meant to be a Jesus-esque character. IMO, it's a pretty weak way to give it meaning. The first film was decent, but the sequels were mindnumbing with stupid Psychology 101 jargon.

Not to mention the fight scenes got annoying.

I would definetly have to rewatch the films in order to remember them all. Obviously there were a ton of religious references, some deeper than others. Personally it's always hard for me to take Keanu seriously, but I did enjoy the Matrix films. If I get a chance to watch one over the weekend, I'll comment again.

RB - Here's an article written by a guy who went into exceeding detail about the meaning of the Matrix, religious allusions, etc. He starts with Matrix Reloaded and there's a link for his analysis for Matrix Revolutions.

Although interesting, I wasn't a big fan of the guy's writing style. I actually found him annoying. But still, you can see that he put a lot of effort into it and may be worth a read.

I heard the second two movies sucked, so I only watched the first one. I was pleased and chances are... I'll never watch the next two. An independant film director I worked with at one time was surprised from all the movies I haven't seen. With him, I ended up watching Kill Bill Vol. 1 (didn't care for), Scarface (liked), and the Matrix (liked). I've yet to see the movie "Traffic" which he had on hand. Maybe I'll rent it....

the most obvious is that therte is the messianic figure in Kenau Reeves -- he is the Chosen One who will save the real people from the Matrix. Then there is the character named "Trinity" -- how religious can you get?

Yes it is all very religious ...

There is a Buddhist aspect too in that the idea that the world we see is an illusion and that "reality" lies someplace else.

RB, Matrix was inspired from a lot of religious principles of Christianity, Buddhism, Zen and its variants. It was clearly mentioned in their official website (google for it). It is also inspired from thoughts of DesCartes and other philosophers. I absolutely loved the first movie. It is one of my all time favorites. I watched the second, it was not bad for a sequel, but had introduced a lot of bullshit. It could be justified only if something great were to happen in part 3 to tie all loose ends and answer the questions raised in the first part. I haven't watched the 3rd part yet, but I was told that it was a no good movie and did not answer the part 1 questions.
