Don't laugh at me, but I've never actually seen a Western movie. What are some of the best ones, and how would you guys rank them?

The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly. It's about 3 people who go on a hunt to find like $50,000 or something buried in a grave in a cemetary.

Definitely up there on the list of top movies of all time. It's directed by the Sergio Leone, the same guy that did Once Upon A Time In America, not sure if you've seen that.

Good, Bad, & Ugly is the only western I've really seen, there's also For A Few Dollars More and A Fistful Of Dollars, which are sequels or prequels or something to Good, Bad, & Ugly.

And of course there's tons more, but those are the ones I really only know about.

Oh, I forgot to mention...GB&U stars Clint Eastwood, and none other than...Don Altobello from Godfather 3.

Tombstone! Not only my favorite Western, but one of my favorite movies of all time. Plus, as Don Vercetti listed, The Man With No Name Trilogy is great

The 'Dollars Trilogy' is the only trilogy I know that got exponentially better with each film.

Although 'The Man With No Name' officially is the Dollars trilogy's antihero, it has unofficially become known to refer to these roles in addition.

Harmonica in Once upon a Time in the West
The Stranger in High Plains Drifter
The Preacher in Pale Rider

These are all mysterious characters, although I limit the phrase to the Dollars movies only.

I saw it myself a couple of weeks ago for the first time and I was a little disappointed. I didn't find it to be better than Tombstone

I've seen parts of Tombstone but it looked mediocre from what I saw aside Kilmer and Boothe. I gotta find it all playing on TV one of these days. And Costner's Wyatt Earp is supposedly shitty.

On the subject of Costner, another good western is Open Range, which not many have talked about here.

Think of westerns and you think of John Wayne. Two of his MUST sees are "Stagecoach" (1939) and "The Searchers" (1956). Both are excellent character studies and although they both take place in the old west they could easily be adapted to other locales and times. Wayne portrays two different types in these two different movies but he's at his best in both.

Lonesome Dove (the first one) is excellent! I finally recently got it on DVD! The second one supremely sucks, though.

I've never seen a real western yet, but I won't say no to a fresh episode of Bonanza!

One which hasn't been mentioned: My Darling Clementine (1946), by Ford.

Another one I wanna see Capo. I'm really getting into Henry Fonda films.

Another thing I forgot to mention about The Searchers is how it inspired the plot of both Taxi Driver and Star Wars.

My Top Two are "Shane" and "Unforgiven." "Hombre" is right up there.
