Hey, we have one poll for the Family's enemies, so here's one for the traitors! ..."I always thought it would have been Clemenza..."

"Mr. Corleone is a man who insists on hearing bad news immediately..." wink

Gotta be Carlo. He was responsible for the death of one of the most prominent characters Sonny. Where was Fredo?

Gotta be Tessio.

Sure, Carlo's act was bad, but he was a strunz from the start. Sure, he helped kill Sonny, but IF Tessio's plan had worked it would have meant that Michael would be dead, too.

Tessio had a very important position in the Family but his greed got the best of him. Perhaps the title of this thread should be "Least Favorite Traitor".

I voted Tessio. He almost got Michael killed, and his betrayal delivered one of my favorite scenes in the trilogy, his hit. smile

I voted for Fredo. His betrayal and Michael's subsequent killing of him was probably the most emotional betrayal in all of the GF movies.

"Fredo, you're my older brother, and I love you. But don't ever take sides with anyone against the family again. Ever."

"Fredo, you're nothing to me now; not a brother, not a friend. I don't want to know you or what you do."

"Only don't tell me you're innocent. Because it insults my intelligence."

In my opinion Frankie isnt even a traitor, he was a victinm of circumstances, he was wrong to talk to the senate, but he didnt NOT betray michael

Sonny - Well then, business will have to suffer, all right? And listen, do me a favor, Tom. No more advice on how to patch things up, just help me win, please

What kind of betrayal does a Mob organization take more personal/seriously? Selling out the Family to a rival (Like Carlo, Tessio, Paulie and Fredo did)? Or breaking the Omerta (like Franky and Cicci did)?

I voted for Sal Tessio. The main reason is that he was such a vital part of the Family. Carlo was meaningless, as was Zasa. I think the ultimate traitor would have been if Richard Castellano would have played Clemenza in Part II instead of having to invent Frankie Five Angels. ohwell

Dont agree, even if it had been Fat Clemenza, the fact is he was caught in the middle of Roth and Mike, the fact is Roth had 2 ready made patsy's in Fredo and Pentangeli, neither of whom really did anything that bad. Roth was the only true BASTARD in GFII imo.

Agree about Tessio, its a bit of twist really, a first time viewer would be well surprised

i would have to say fredo. i thinki read somebody earlier saying it was one of the most emotional betrayals. and no pun intented but it trule "broke my heart." its just sad to see how deep mike had gotten into the business and how he lost it all. another thing the scene between micheal and kay where kay reveals to micheal that she had an abortion. it was such an emotional scene. one of my favoites. its still boggles my mind that pacino didnt win an oscar for any of the godfather films. i mean great performance in scent of a woman but i mean he was just so brillian in the trilogy.

Michael Corleone: My father made him an offer he couldn't refuse.
Kay Adams: What was that?
Michael Corleone: Luca Brasi, held a gun to his head, and my father assured him, that either his brain or his signature would be on the contract.

I voted for Fredo too, because he really was weak, and was led to believe all sorts of crap from other people. He was tricked into setting up Mike, and although he did deserve it when he was killed(he was a threat the the saftey and well-being of numerous people while living), it was a sad scene.

I dont think Fredo was a threat, if Mike had forgiven him, im certain things would have been fine for Fredo, although his role in the family business would have to be reduced

By Mike forgiving him, Fredo wouldnt have grown any smarter.Enemies would still be able to trick him into betreying mike over and over again. Reducing his power in the family might have even made it worse, because I highly doubt Fredo had a lot of power to begin with, and now he would be even hungrier for power, for" something in it for me, on my own!" What do you mean he wasnt a threat!

Tessio, one of the original members of the family. That look on his face when he asked to get off for old times sake is probably what landed him his own TV series: "Fish"

"...for old times' sake?"

thats the best moment in trilogy sonof70's

I dont think Fredo was a threat because he was totally utterly sorry for what he did, and i dont believe would ever try to harm mike again, he's Stupid but not that Stupid

Hollywood, your lucky Apple didnt see this tongue
Yes Fredo was truely sorry for what he did, and he would have lived with that feeling for a year, maybe 2.But something would have come up again, and he would betrey Mike again, intentional or not.Fredo could never accept his place UNDER his YOUNGER brother. What he said in the boathouse sealed his fate. "I'm your older brother Mike, and I was stepped over! ...That aint the way I wanted it!" Meaning he was always going to try to be the Don, until he was dead.
Sonny from A Bronx Tale said it best, "Fear lasts longer than love" In the same way, greed lasts longer than sorrow.Fredo's feelings of guilt for hurting Mike would have lasted until another offer was presented to him. He would have never stopped.

i don't agree, if Clemenza also (tessio) betrayed Micheal, that would give the impression that nobody is loyal. The caporegimes of the godfather 1; Tessio and Clemenza, both betray Micheal. One of them needs to stay loyal. Otherwise it give a bad impression to the crowd..they would think is was very normal to betray your boss, they would think (nearly) everybody did it. And because of that they would think Mike was very stupid, to trust his men so much...... ohwell maybe i'm getting to serious...

But the important thing to remember is that Clemenza wasnt in part 2 so he remains a loyal capo, as was intended in the book. I love the way Mike respects tessios move, hes not even angry 'Its the smart move, Tessio was always smarter' Even Hagen thought it'd be Clemenza.

Was Coppola DEFINITELY going to make Clemenza a rat? find it so hard to believe, they may have just adapted the screenplay once Frankie came in

I voted for Tessio - he was such an important member of the family and went way back to the early days with Vito it was 'shocking'! When he's about to be taken away and he asks Tom for help was really touching - Tom seemed really saddened by it.

Its an astonishing moment, so underrated, no-one ever talks about that scene, just the horses head, and the baptism massacre, but for me the Tessio scene is the greatest

Hmmm, I would say the most effective antagonists were Barzini and Hyman Roth. I would go with Roth, cus he used Pentangeli, it's clear to me that if he could use a player like Pantangeli either from the start of by manipulating the events following the bothced hit(was it botched or made to look botched?), he was Michael's most formidible foe. He also used Fredo against him to sneak people into the compound for the botch assasination. I think he was the biggest challenge to Michael.

Barzini by comparison, was using his power as the next biggest Mob-boss against Vito in the first one and it was just a matter of peeling back the layers of the onion until you got to the stinking core.

Fredo is definatly the most emotional betrayer, I would have to agree with that previous statement. Patically becasue he is so weak, he can't even keep his woman in line and in the 60's, that was a big deal, I guess. But Fredo is more of a victum, stupid, frail, weak willed as he is described it's tragic that he has to go as well.

Note: That I am including Roth and to a lesser extent Barzini because in a limited sense they had a truce in the case of Barzini, a politcal correspondence and seats on the same council and for Roth, he was Michael's business partner.
