To answer your question, Sicilians are called Sicilians because they are a seperate island. Just like you would call someone who lives in Hawaii, Hawaiian instead of American.
The Calabresians may be a lot like Sicilians, but they are not.
Also, Sicily is very dependent from the rest of the country, being ruled over my many different forces. Way back when, their name would change every week, depending on who controlled them (i.e. the Greeks, Arabs, Romans, etc.) Instead, everyone just reffered to them as Sicilians.
