I got an idea, why don't we tell JG and SC we're giving up the Gangster BB for Lent and suggest they do the same. We can then rule the board ourselves, it'll be madness, we can all swing off the roof, get a trampoline in, smash the lights out with our heads. C'mon join in, we'll get one of those little cars with loads of clowns coming out and throw custard pies at them. We'll drink milk till we puke.

Turi,

Everyone giving up the BB for six weeks. Wouldn't that be the ultimate joke to play on Geoff and SC??? I can't imagine NO ONE posting. Actually, that'd be a true sacrifice for everyone here wouldn't it?

I haven't really decided what to give up for Lent this year...but I'll tell you what I'm not giving up - watching Seinfeld. Wow Goombah, I don't think I could do that.

Also, you're short-changing yourself...it's on four times per night - 6 & 6:30 on TBS, 7 & 11 on WJW-8.

SC: Hey, Geoff, what are you giving up for Lent?

JG: I'm gonna stop drinking.

SC: You kiddin'? You'll put three potato farmers and six distillery workers out of business.

JG: Yeah, maybe thats too harsh. Whaddya say we take off for the Caribbean and check out the babes.

SC: Great idea! A 40 day vacation!

JG & SC: (whispering in unison) I wonder if they'll fall for that.

Dear Heathens, Non-Believers, Fallen-away Catholics, etc. ,

To expand on Don Cardis answer.....on Ash Wednesday; the receiving of ashes is an outward sign that you recognize yourself as a sinner and you have vowed to repent and turn away from sin. The abstinence from meat on Ash Wednesday, Fridays (not Holy Days) is to remind us of this pledge. Meat is symbolic of a pleasure or luxury (not really true today since fish is OK, but a good filet of red snapper costs more than a hot dog.)

The practice of "giving up" something is suppose to further our commitment to repentance. What is NOT suppose to happen is abstaining from chocolate and then after Lent gorging yourself and returning to the same chocolate habit. Instead, examine your conscience for something you've been doing that is morally or socially unacceptable; like calling people names, cursing, drinking to excess (Turi excluded). Make it something that you would like to change beyond Lent. Then stick to the commitment, reminding yourself on Friday when abstaining from meat (or something else appropriate)that you are repenting.

That's from a practicing Catholic. My prayers are with you.

I would love to have some faith in this sort of thing. Thanks for the extra clarification MaryCas. I honestly don't know anyone who has even mentioned Lent to me since School. I always compared it to Ramadan and both really seem about character building.

Shit, many aren't even Christian apparently!
It's all just about labels, I supposed. But c'mon, people gotta stop labeling themselves as something they're not! :p
Yeah I know what you mean and I dont blame you, though I am guilty of the crime. I only say that I am "(supposedly) Catholic" because my parents were, and many years of my young life were spent forced into studying it. I was just saying that I am supposed to know all this, because of my Catholic background.

Is this a personal jab? I am not even Catholic, I'm Baptist. We don't do lent. Here I was thinking I was doing something great and beyond the call of Baptist-duty by sacrificing one of my beloved foods for God and I'm told that I am flat out WRONG! ha ha.

That's what I get for trying to get Extra Credit from God.

I should give something up, such as smoking or alcohol but it isn't going to happen, life is much more fun with them for me

This year for about the first time in fifteen years I shall be refraining from the consumption of alcoholic beverages during the Lenten period.
