The other day I was just looking around at these websites and came across "The Stairway To Heaven", saying satanic messages..Now I for one am a pretty big Jimmy Paige fan, and knew that they werent satanic, the page told me to record the part

"If theres a bustle in your hedgerow, dont be alarmed, its just a spring clean for the may queen.Yes there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run, there's still time to change the road your on"

So I recorded the part with my mic, and played it in reverse. Backwards it appeared to say:

"Oh here's to my sweet Satan. The one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is satan. He'll give those with him 666, there was a little toolshed where he made us suffer, sad satan."

Now I showed my friend and he showed me this link, where he also heard it, but this site has the original and the reverse play on the site, I tried the metallica version of this song, which isnt as fast as the original Led version but is way more clearer..So check it out!

Stairway to heaven in reverse.

Yeah, my ex-friend showed me that a while ago... if you listen to the Yoko Ono one backwards, you hear "I shot John Lennon"... and the other ones are pretty cool too.

Subliminals and backward masking are legends worthy of Mythbusters...but still open to discussion because it can be done and COULD be true...

A long time ago in a decade far, far away, I took a vinyl copy (early pressing from the '70's) of Led Zeppelin IV ("ZOSO") containing Stairway to Heaven into the production room of the radio station where I was working at the time, and recorded the entire song onto an Otari reel-to-reel. Like all studio quality reel-to-reels, the Otari has a large pinch roller and you can re-thread the tape the opposite direction over the pinch roller and capstan. Both the feed and take-up reels have a clutch that spins them gently in opposite directions to keep the tape under constant tension. This means the tape can be recorded correctly and played perfectly forwards or backwards at the same speed it was recorded. It also has two speed options. You can record at one speed and playback at another to create a half-speed ("stoned"), same speed, or double-speed ("chipmunks") playback.

I spent a day on this...recording and playing back at half-speed, same speed and double speed. I brought co-workers into the production room to listen. And we all concluded the same thing. If there's something recorded backwards, it's barely intelligible, open to wide interpretation, and probably coincidental.

Keep in mind this was from an early vinyl copy of the album. As the legend grows, who's to say it hasn't been "enhanced" with subsequent releases of the song...or by "well-meaning" folks with web sites and a copy of ProTools. Today you can do exactly what I did with any digital audio program...a lot faster...just like the guy on that web site, Mikelle.

Don't underestimate the power of suggestion either. Reading someone else's alleged backwards lyrics doesn't mean it's really in the music. You've only allowed yourself to be influenced by someone else's ears. I might write something entirely different, and I'll bet you could do the same, and we might each convince the other that's what we're hearing.

Hell, half the time I can't understand Tom Waits or REM in real-time and I've been listening to both of them for at least 20 years.

About 10 years ago I bought an old copy of Led Zeppelin IV and spun it backwards by hand on an old turn table. At the point in the song where Robert Plant sings "And as we wind on down the road" you can hear "my sweet satan" as clear as a bell.

Bah, there are dozens of songs that can be played backwards and you can "hear" things (Revolution #9 by The Beatles, for example).

If you get stoned enough, you can probably hear LOTS of things when you play stuff backwards. :p

Never really been a Zeplin fan and I think Stairway is overrated, but I dont think any band purposely puts satanic messages if you play thier albums backwards. Merely a coinsidence. Somewhat like De ja vu.

i do agree that no rock star would bother to go to such lengths to put a backwords meaning on the song. im sure they are busy enough recording their songs, making sure they sound good. and what not.

I'm not saying they did it on purpose, I'm just saying it's there.

if it is not on purpose, it gives me the creeps that "indistingui gibberish" turned out to be "Paul is a dead man. miss him miss him", with all the myth about Paul's death.

this is Paul McCartney himself. I know he isn't dead, but there is a conspiration theory that says that Paul died in a car accident and was replaced by another musician. of course this is bullshit, but the Beatles started making jokes about it (the covers of Abbey Road and Sgt. Peppers are an example).

The "Paul is Dead" hoax revolves around a motorcycle accident McCartney had in 1966. Supposedly, it was kept hidden from the papers, he was in a car, and he died in a blazing inferno (From, "A Day in the Life" - He blew his mind out in a car, he didn't notice that the lights had changed..."Don't Pass Me By" - You were in a car crash and you lost your hair).

The "rumour" continues that the remaining three Beatles held a "Paul lookalike" contest, picking William Campbell (aka "Billy Shears" of Sgt. Pepper fame). He had plastic surgery to even further his resemblance, vocal coaching, etc. The scar on "Paul's" lip (which happened when he hit his tooth in the accident) was actually from a botch part of the plastic surgery on Campbell.

That stuff is amazing DJ! I was glued to the screen, although a lot of it seemed a little too farfetched to be true.

About Stairway, I think a lot of it is just crap and most words could be made into anything. But that is just my opinion.

Danny, your right, I counldnt pick out anything, unless I had the words in front of me. Best ones were the Pokeman and Queen one. The Emenim one was retarted, sounded like he couldnt pronounce cinnimon. I really did like the Pink Floyd one though.

One of my favorite SNL moments:

Chris Farley: Remember when you were with the Beatles and you were supposed to be dead, and there were all these clues, like you play some song backwards and it'd say, like "Paul is Dead" and everybody thought you were dead and, um, that was a hoax right?

Paul McCartney: Yeah, I wasn't really dead.

I don't think anyone really thought/thinks Paul is dead, but the rumour was something the Beatles, with their oft black humour, did seek to eccentuate and further, as a sort of "in" joke for themselves. Much like any conspiracy, the whole "Paul is Dead" hoax is fun to examine because you can see "links" but in the end, most of it is just for sillyness and nothing more.

wow, i really didnt' know any of the paul is dead rumours. im only 20, so i guess i have an excuse. but it is very interesting. and some of those close were creative. people must have really put some time into coming up with these clues. but anyways.

the pink floyd one is obviously purposely done by the band. i wouldn't doubt they would do something crazy like that.

The best Pink Floyd thing is when you play the "Dark Side of the Moon" LP alongside the Wizard of Oz...it's pretty freaky, as I understand.

What happens? I've never heard that one..

I knew all about the Paul is Dead thing though.. I'm pretty sure I read a book or something on the subject. Very interesting.. complete bullshit, but very interesting nonetheless.

Despite the link to the rebuttal page at the end of the site you linked, DJ, I think it was intentional. It's just too much coincidence. I've tried it too, and that definitely can't be an accident.

And several titles of the songs are parallel to the movie's situations. And a few sounds, like when Dorothy looks at the sky the song has a plane sound, etc. I think it's only less then an hour though.
