On 8 December 1980,one of the great- singer/songwriters/philosoper of the 20th Century- was murdered outside his home at Dakota,New York on his way home from recording the Album Double Fantasy/Milk and Honey. When he was gunned down by a Sick B*****d (Mark Chapman)5 hours earlier he had stopped to sign a autograph for him. Even though i wasn't born until 2 years after is death, i have grown to love him and is music, there has never been the like's of him again, and there never will. I will always love is music and the legend of John Lennon. Do any of you on the board remember that fatel day.How did you feel. I would like to hear from you . Be interesting to see what he would make of todays world and the Iraq war " Make Love Not War " Thank for reading

It was a surreal moment...it was a Monday night. I was in college, living off-campus, but passing throught my old dorm to see some friends. I stopped in the TV lounge for a few minutes of Monday Night Football when Howard Cosell broke the news on the air during the game broadcast.
I can still hear Cosell's vocal cadence as he announced it: "Ex-Beatle John Lennon...shot twice in the back...rushed to the hospital...dead on arrival."
I was shocked. I didn't know him, wasn't a Beatlemaniac, but Lennon was the first icon of my generation to die suddenly, victim of a crime, too young.

Why do things like this happen to people like John Lennon?? We have been robbed of god knows how many more brilliant songs from this genius. May he "REST IN PEACE" Do you think he could be up there jamming with Hendrix, Morrison, Harrison, Pressley et al?

I remember it as well. We had just moved to CA in 1980. I remember shortly before his death, driving by a pizza place (of all places). They had a banner outside that read: "John Lennon Is 40." Don't remember when is birthday was, but it was shortly after that he was killed. Definitely a talented singer/songwriter who's music fortunately will remain with us forever. If he were alive today, I would imagine he'd be releasing "Give Peace A Chance" once again. TIS

John Lennon, at least in his early life, was not a big believer in the whole God thing. He thought of God as just being a word. I believe, like George, he was much more into spiritualism and such. He was a great man and one of the most important thinkers of our time. His song Imagine is on the best 500 songs ever according to Rolling Stone at number 3. I also like Jealous Guy, Instant Karma!, Love, Mother, Cold Turkey, and Mind Games to name a few. He was great, his post-Beatles stuff was never as good as Paul's in my opinion, but none the less, he was truely special. Thank Goodness Mark David ChapF*uck was denied parole yet again. Too bad, maybe if he got out he could be blown away too.
John is and will continue to be sorely missed. George now too. I have read all the accounts of his death and they are heart-breaking. RIP John. One of our most treasured musical talents ever.

Shrewd devil, you know very well that God pardons singers no matter what they do, because he can simply die for a song.

Imagine
Imagine there's still Lennon, It's really hard to do, twenty four years have passed, a piece of us died that day too, Imagine there’s still Lennon singing for today...
Imagine there's still Lennon, It’s so hard to do, new music in the eighties & nineties, Maybe a Beatle reunion too, Imagine there’s still Lennon singing of living in peace...
Imagine there’s still Lennon, I wonder if you can, What causes would he stand for, as a mature older man, Imagine there’s still Lennon Singing to the world...
You may say he was a dreamer, but he guided us as one, I hope this day you'll remember, All You Need is Love…
We Still Miss You John

It's the most covered song ever. More people have covered that in their own ways than any other song. Doc

Originally posted by Double-J: If I recall, Chapman doesn't even want to be paroled... I read a recent interview with him and how he thinks he is completely cured. He does agree he did a horrible thing and does not deserve freedom likely. He also believes he will be killed quickly on the outside world. As for wanting parole, I think you are right in saying he probably thinks it's for the best if he stays in the "laughing acadamey".(Because he does not want his dumb ass to be blown away.) Doc
