Now we all can agree that Paul Castellano lost his respect by 1985 but he was still a "Mafia Aristocrat" as the phrase I coined goes. The guy was by blood connected to the Gambinos and his personal bloodline, The Castellanos traced back to Sicily as well. The question is, Why the Sicilian just let that go??? And should retaliation been handled by them or was it the Commission's (Chin) responsibility to handle it?

According to Kurens and O'Brien, in their book, "Boss of Bosses," Paul had no support among the troops. They resented him because he dissed Dellacroce by not attending his wake or funeral; because he never mingled with them in the street or at social clubs; because he carried on openly with his Colombian maid, Gloria Olarte, under the same roof where his wife and daughter dwelled; because he made deals with other families that they believed disadvantaged them; and--most important--because he was cheap and stingy with them. The other bosses resented Paul because they heard (or heard of) tapes the government made that showed him dissing them. But what scared them the most was their fear that he'd rat them out rather than spend the rest of his life in prison, away from his beloved Gloria.

There were a lot of Castellano loyalists who sat on their hands instead of engaging in an inter family civil war a la Colombo family. Nino Gaggi, his biggest supporter, was in jail but there were a lot of soldiers like Joe Billotti and Louis Milito who could have conspired with Gaspipe and Gigante. Jimmy Failla wasn't happy about Big Paul getting whacked, Joe Gambino, Anthony Scotto and other loyalist capo's should have retaliated with the other families after Gotti took control of the Gambino family. Interesting point. I get it, Gotti was charismatic and a throwback to Albert Anastasia. Not necessarily in style but the vibe. Gotti fed that need in the Family. People forget because of Don Carlo's Sicilian style but we are still talking about the remnants of Murder Inc. I don't think the Gambinos get looked at as such. This is the branch of Cosa Nostra both John and Sammy came up under thru Dellacroce, Toddo Aurello and Carmine Fatico.

I think it was looked at that the Dellacroce was behind the hit. Remember the family was divided into to. Dellacroce faction had the Blue Collar/Street Guys/Shooters and Castellano had the White Collar/Money Makers
The only crew that Paul had that could do work was Demeo, who he had whacked and let two of the heavy hitters go with Gas.
Essentially, he had no BITE.
More importantly most guys in the family felt they weren't earning enough that what matters the most to these guys anyway, the MIGHTY DOLLAR.
As for Chin, I said this before he is made to be the real boss of BOSSES, and that Gotit was afraid of him, etc.
However, he had his whole Borgata, the whole Commision behind him and guys inside the Gambino, family that wanted REVENGE
Gotti, never hid a day after the hit.
Why not send a few carloads to the Bergin where Gotti and his whole crew were every day?
Or when he was driving from his house to the Bergin.
Or when he was driving from the Bergin to the Rivenite?
Yeah so, they would have killed more than just Gotti, isn't that a pretty good message to deter anyone from looking for revenge?
Or....?
Instead, he was in on breaking a commission rule of using a bomb which was a no no.
When Gotti, wanted to Kill Castellano, he sent shooters and back up shooters, back up shooters for the backups. When Persico, wanted to Kill Scopo, he sent shooters, backups, and more backups.
The way the Chin handled Gotti, by farming it out to Gas Pipe was almost like he was the one that was scared.
The boss of BOSSES, farms out a murder contract without signing his name to it.
