Joseph (Little Joe) Defede, who rose from a bookie operating out of a hot dog wagon to his lofty mob perch by being a good handball partner for boss Vittorio (Vic) Amuso

Defede, an unlikely mob kingpin, used to operate a hot dog truck in Brooklyn that doubled as a numbers bank. A long time friend and handball partner of Luchese boss Vittorio (Vic) Amuso, Defede took over as acting boss in 1994, not long after Amuso's conviction and life sentence were upheld by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.
“Little Joe was not a tough guy, but he had Amuso’s backing, and he often met with the leaders of the other four families,” said one law enforcement source.

DeFede was an associate of the Colombo Family for about 20 years until Amuso inducted in him into the Lucchese Family.DeFede was sentenced to prison for extorting the Garment Center in 1998, released in 2002 and decided to flip in the same year after Amuso put a contract out on him after suspecting that he was skimming money from him during his time as the Acting Boss.

Damn that Amuso-Casso were sure good at turning people into rats. I think since those wayward days the Luccheses have had only one made guy flip, John Pennisi. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Crea was with DeFede when he was the Acting Boss, Crea was the Underboss of the Lucchese Family during that time but the reason why Amuso put a contract out on DeFede was because the profits of the family suddenly rose when Crea became the Acting Boss which led Amuso to believe that DeFede was skimming.

I see a lot of people sympathetic towards Anthony Accetturo the former Jersey Capo and Peter Chiodo who both flipped during Amuso’s reign as boss on the street but honestly Accetturo became arrogant, he was kicking up 50k a year I think it was to Tony Ducks and he had a great relationship with him. This all changed when Amuso became the boss who demanded 50 percent of the money that the Jersey Faction made but Accetturo, when he flipped constantly went on about how he was “Cosa Nostra” about how he was good and all but the boss is the boss and when he tells you to kick up 50 percent you should do it, especially when you claim that you followed the rules and that you were true to the life.
As for Chiodo, he didn’t even ask for permission from Vic and Gas to plead guilty when he should have because Vic and Gas had a strategy to beat the Windows Case plus when you plead guilty on a case that contains the boss and the underboss of the family then you definitely should ask for permission.Chiodo was hiding out at his home before he got shot because he knew what he did was wrong and really because Vic and Gas were going to kill him

Wow, you actually offer a fresh perspective, never thought of it like that. I agree too.

Great info on Chiodo, I had not heard about that.
