Who really knows, but it could have been he was afraid of the IRS (or his old family), or he could have been really broke. I guess being able to manage money when you have a huge income is one thing, when you have to make savings last a long time is another.

An example of street life not being the greatest career choice for old age and retirement! I’m sure joe was doing okay but he lived a long time after the 60s when he was forced to leave. To upkeep his lifestyle he was accustomed to as a boss would’ve been impossible. That must have been a huge adjustment, going from having everyone in a NY family kick up to him on a regular basis, to being just another retired guy.
