Most are aware that the mafia pretty much controlled the distribution of pornographic magazines (and films of course).

What about the distribution of regular magazines? Was it ever a big thing?

In the 1970s and 1980s, DC comics had mob ties in a big way. Then in the 90's Marvel comics had shareholders which some of them were connected to the mob. DC knew them, but also knew they could get a loan (which was done legally) without raising too many eyebrows. I know the Tampa family had a local owned small Cigar magazine, and San Francisco family also had a small Wine magazine for the Napa Valley. So yes they did distribute other magazine besides porn. Porn and comics are big money makers and still are for the mob. For comic books most of them are Independent Distributors. I know that the Yakuza makes a killing at Comiket in Japan. The New York Mafia families (now just the Genovese and Lucchese families) had their fingers in The Big Apple Comic Con, and Chicago family started to gain influence in the Chicago Comic con during the 1980's.

The distribution of porn was so large and widespread the mob was a minuscule part of it if they were involved at all. They may have shaken down a few people in New York and other cities but they were not big in the magazine distribution part of it. Gambling was always their biggest racket, followed by unions and loansharking.

Didn't know about their interest in comics. Interesting!

Very interesting, I've never heard this before.

There was a comic book artist named Vince "Vinnie" Colletta that supposedly had mob ties. On his wikipage it says that his father fled Italy and was a high ranking member of the mafia. Being a fan of comic book art I've read in a few different magazines and heard from a few different sources that Colletta was definitely a "connected" guy, but to what extent I don't know. He was an inker over many different pencilers at Marvel back in the 60-80's, later on became Art Director. Wonder if there's any truth to his alleged mob connections, but the rumor has been around for a long time.
