According to Joe Valachi testifying at the McClellan hearings, when the books opened around 1954, Frank Scalice and Albert Anastasia initiated a couple of hundred members and some of them were "commercialized" as Valachi puts it, paying $40,000 to become a member. According to him they were "kids there who was with Frank Luciano" one called JoJo.
Later on in his testimony, Valachi lists several members who were initiated by Scalice. These include Jimmy Squillante, Jerry Mancuso, Aniello "Wahoo" Mancuso, "ch*nk" Leo, Frank Rocci, Tony the Geep, Mike the Geep, Carmine Camarado, Jimmy Ward, Salvatore Bonfrisco, Jojo and Dudu. Valachi indicates they all paid $40,000 to become members. He also says that some paid with their business and then never saw their business again.
In Vinnie Teresa's book, he says Anguilo became a member pretty much the way pmac said it. Lombardo shut down his gambling activities because of the Keafuaver heat, Anguilo picked up the slack, started getting shook down by Larry Baione and others, didn't like that, so starting giving Patriarca $100,000 a month directly and became a member for that. However, Teresa hasn't always proven himself to be a credible source. I can see how that story can be interpreted as him buying his button, but I would say it is more him being a good earner.

IMO I think Joe Ruggiero paid his way in somehow with the Patriarca's. I just find it odd he has all these " legitimate " business's in Fall River, etc but has never been pinched or anything. The only time you ever hear his name is having to do with business deals he's done. To me it smells like a buy in. No facts to back it up just my opinion from a distance. I hope New England doesn't get too butt hurt.......

There are basically 3 ways in
1) Birthright i.e. your father, uncle cousin etc.
2) You are a big earner essentially you are buying your button that way. Keep kicking up .... It's all always about money.
3) You are involved in a murder plot for the family.
In 2018 really aren't any murders anymore.
So either your taking over your dad's or uncles rackets or your earning/paying enough so your captain or boss will sponsor you.
Out right buying the button has probably happened a LOT more than we know however, it is against the rules and no one is looking to open their mouth about it.
It would go something like this you are seeing whoever is over you with an envelope(s) and you express your desire for the button, he gives you a wink as says keep this up and when they open the books I'll put you in.
Now whether that money in that envelope is coming from actual rackets or it's the guys communion money nobody knows or cares.
In life especially in cosa nostra what matters most is not what you are doing rather how you are doing it.. And know there's only one Rule..#1..You have to be nuts.

I can believe Anastasia made a few pay him, but $40,000 was so much money in that time, I think $4,000 is more realistic.

Part that seems off to me is the "initiated a couple hundred members" part. I know it's the Gambinos and they are the largest or 2nd largest of the families but making a couple hundred guys seems way off to me. Should be more along the lines of "initiated a couple members."
I read somewhere,i think on the other forum(if you post on this forum too please speak up, I'm not trying to take credit for your info) about how Anastasia being Calabrian had something to do with him selling memberships. Believe they said it is common practice in Italy for guys to buy into the 'Ndrangheta. I can't remember if it was the same poster(I think Pogo said this and I know he doesn't post here)but someone said it is acceptable for 'Ndrangheta leadership to alert authorities about a members activities if it will stop a murder or squash a beef.
