It stems from a few things.
Generations go in circles. The Greatest Generation tended to be more conservative while the baby boomers were the counter culture generation. Generation X saw the pendulum swing the other way, especially in the white collar world. While Generation Y (my generation) is something of a rebirth of the hippy culture of the sixties, only the term now is 'hipster'.
My generation votes overwhelmingly Democrat (60%). My parents generation votes more Republican.
But that aside, colleges are populated by faculties that are very liberal and far left. Being a liberal in itself is not bad, we all have opinions on politics, but you're bound to get a few nuts in the can every now and then, especially when it's so prevalent in a very educated, respected part of our society: Professors. These are the teachers who have access to a demographic age group that's very impressionable. They are not supposed to indoctrinate, they are supposed to educate. But many nowadays don't do that. Rather than support a full spectrum of ideas, they squash the ones that goes against their ideology. They're teaching young adults what to think not how to think.
In the effort to become more "inclusive" and diverse, many universities and colleges have become the opposite. Tolerance only goes as far as political correctness and left wing politics will allow. Any student or professor that goes against that is in for a rude awakening. Hell I had a conservative professor in college that got fired and rehired 6 times for expressing views the college deemed 'unfit' in the classroom. If by the fact he expressed he was Republican and voted for McCain in 08 that means he was unfit, that's sad to me.
This speech code enacted by these whackjobs does nothing to promote this beautiful, wonderful, utopian...sorry dystopian society they want to create. A society where just thinking the wrong thing can get you ostracized, threatened or worse. I know it seems extreme but if we do not put a stop to this right now, the last thing we'll need to worry about is the potential offensiveness of the word 'American'. Goddamn this grinds my gears
