Something that has always been of interest to me is the different ways that families generate income. Specifically the way that Chicago earns or has earned in the past compared to the families in NY. Please let's not turn this into a Chi vs NY debate as to which family is better or more powerful. My interest is simply discussing the areas of income that would be unique to each fa,ily, yes I understand there are 5 in New York.

Example for NY is garbage from my understanding Chi never really turned that into a racket. Example for Chi would be the national wire service or the Vegas casinos.

You just answered a part of your own question. From my understanding back in the old days the NY mob biggest rackets were the docks, garbage, construction, garment indusrty and narcotics. The Chi mob and the midwest crime families had everything that was connected to gambling, including casinos(not just in Vegas), wire services, bookmaking, all kinds of numbers rackets, slot machines etc. Also both organizations were involved in the union racket but i think that the Outfit had a bigger share.

Although the Outfit was also involved in the garbage business but not on the same scale as the NY mob.
