Seems to me that this family either let's or it's members just decide to retire much more often than other families. I'm talking about top guys mostly btw. From Costello who I know was forced to Benny squints to most of the older guys now. I'm sure someone could list a bunch. Why do other families not do this as much. It seems like a good idea because the old boss can put into place his successor and be around to make sure the transition is smooth.

Besides, you'd rather have an old man watering his plants in the backyard instead of an old man pointing fingers in the court.

That's one of the biggest myths out there, buddy: That you're not allowed to retire. Sure, you have to "get permission." But when you're 80 years old, no one is going to stop you, especially if you were well respected as a younger guy.

And more often than not, some of the old timers just get put out to pasture, especially when they stop earning. And sometimes it creates resentment. It turned Georgie Barone into a rat, and in his younger days that would have been unthinkable.

Oh, and it happens in ALL of the Families, not just the Genovese. You just read more about the Genovese guys because they're more "newsworthy."

I'm sorry if it's a stupid question, but what usually stops the old timers from earning? I imagine the made guys have long established rackets and associates to use as muscle. Is it simply younger guys of same rank taking over their business and them not being able to do anything about it or is it real old age stuff, you know, losing your memory/witts?

The same reasons that prevent any other eighty-year-olds from working. Health reasons, the will to retire, etc. They're just people.

The whole thing about being called is really bullshit. If you were a valued earner throughout your life with the organization, most of the time you are allowed to ride off into the sunset. Most of the guys who are in their late seventies and up who still get involved with murders (and there are very few) do so out of their own freewill.

Yeah I asked because I'm not American so I obviously can't have any first hand experience. But at least it's good that they just don't fuck the old guys over by taking over their rackets and pushing them aside. It's not like that doesn't happen in normal life.

Agreed. If you have a guy wanting to enjoy what little bit of life he has left, you better let him retire so he doesn't end up in court after he's nailed sending you away for life.

But like PB said, it's not like they really worry over it. If we were talking about a bunch of 30 year olds maybe it would be different.

It happens once in awhile. Like I said, that's what turned Georgie Barone into a rat. Sometimes these guys create their own stoolies, and Georgie was a perfect example. It was a rare mistake by that Family.

Yes I understand. Honor isn't a universal value in that life, even if it makes an appearance here and there.

My mind's shot. The Shula's at the Westin is gone. Go to Hooter's at Beach Place instead lol.

Maybe I did notice more west side guys retire because more are free at that age because of the plea deals? Seems to me when I read the sentences of most of their more notable members it's always in months whereas in other families they have longer sentences. And I wasn't saying other families don't let their guys retire because like has been pointed out when someone is that old you can't make them put forth energy it takes to be a successful criminal.

Well, first off, you have to realize that Tony was Vince's front boss. The way I remember it, Benny split for Florida right after Funzi died. So Vince was de facto boss by the early '80s.

Vince was in his early 50's at the time. Tony was at least 70. Tony had close to twenty years on Vince. He was well into his 70's when he went in for life. A terrible age to head off to prison.

This is what I knew about Tony Salerno. When people started to leave Harlem and moved to other boroughs if he vouched for you with someone in those other boroughs you would be able to get work there no problem.

when u think about it its also a good way to prevent old timers from flipping. I imagine it would normally take less to get an old guy to flip, since a 5 year sentence would be easier to swallow if u are 40 than if u are 80. nobody wants to die in jail.

Some old guys would rather die in jail then help a cop make a case. I know one guy who signed a petition to end the death penalty. Hoping that if he went to jail he had more of a chance to kill a prison guard if he went inside.

Genovese not as big of scumbags as bonnano and colombo and even gambino modern guys from what i inderstand aome luchese old timers are on the level w genovese or timers...migliore madonna napoli crea...i mean colombos basically just have south brooklyn and they had two scarpas who absolutely disintegrated the power structure but scarpa sr was one weird guy fbi informant protected smoked a ton of weed killed more than most got aids had linda fuck larry mazza then betrays his son and his son becomes a capo over scarpa sr for some reason then turns informant. The story is unbelievable. Prob best mob story next to the gotti story and the 3 capos

He doesn't even leave home anymore except for when he spends time in Long Beach, mostly during the summer. He hasn't stepped foot in the restaurant at the Pelham Bay side of Westcheter Avenue in well over a year.

I've posted that he still has his shy and trucking in North Jersey through an emissary a hundred times. It used to be Danny, now it's the Bronx guy's son from Locust Point. The kid's a made guy now himself and a monster earner. His father set him up nice and he did it the right way, this way there's no resentment. But there always gonna be jealous people in that world. It's in their nature.

And he's only "scary" if you buy into the boogeyman legend about him. And the only people who believe that are the guys who've never met him. He's actually more easygoing than most of the other guys his age in that family. He has a sense of humor and everything. But he's been a shell of himself since the thing with his son, and so have his wife and daughter.

I think Dom Cicale did it off the reservation, and that the Feds covered it up for their star stool pigeon. Nicky Cirillo was wrong in what he did. He broke a rule and paid for it. But he was a beast with his hands and he slapped Cicale silly outside Vinny's real estate office on Middletown. It happened in broad daylight with twenty people there. Little Vinny's "involvement" has been highly overstated by the media. But these clowns need something to write about today. This isn't our grandfather's Mafia anymore. Two junkies going at it is news today.

He's alive but he needs full time care. He's gone legally blind. So he ain't reading a book, let alone writing one. Poor guy.
