Marshall Caifano was the first person put in Nevada's "Black Book":

In 1958, responding to bad publicity on Mob involvement in casinos, the Nevada Legislature took control of gaming out of the Tax Commission and put it into a new Gaming Commission. They gave the Gaming Commission several powers, including the "Black Book": a list of people who could be barred from even entering a casino, much less owning or operating one, because of criminal records or even unsavory reputations.

Caifano was a test case: he tested the new regulation by checking into several Vegas hotel/casinos in a week's stay. He was ejected from the Desert Inn and put in the Black Book. He had the nerve to appeal his listing in the Black Book--all the way to the US Supreme Court. He lost.

BTW: Frank Sinatra lost his license for the Cal-Nevada Lodge because he let Sam Giancana stay there. Harry Reid, now Senate Majority Leader, was chairman of the Gaming Commission in 1977.

Source: "The Black Book and the Mob" by Ronald A. Farrell and Carole Case. This is the best book on Mob influence in Nevada gambling. Highly recommended.

Not sure, but I know a Caifano was thanked for helping to raise money for the Thomas Beningo mayoral campaign in Norridge.

I'm not the most knowledgable but I do recall reading several places that Caifano was brought back to Chicago and demoted to some type street position. Apparently Accardo was upset with him. Can't remember the reason.

He also had a brother, Leonard or "Fat Lenny" who was killed by Teddy Roe and some of his guys after a confrontation on a highway. Lenny was close to Giancana. Marshal was sent to Vegas soon after but got knocked down in favor of Tony Spilotro, partly because of his public episodes with his wife, who a lot of people believe was having an affair with Giancana. Marshal was apparently aware of it, but never really seemed to care.

As I recall, Red Wemette testified that Caifano collected street tax from him prior to Lumbo/Schweihs.

My post was based on a book that I recommended to you, not an item on the web.

Kass is a complete wheezing goof clown, but whatever, he's one of the few local reporters with the balls to report on them.
