is the 1970 edition of the Godfather the first one or is it earlier than that? could someone please tell me?

Hope I'm not wrong, but I thought the Godfather book was writen in 1968. And the Godfather 1 movie was released in 1970. GF 2 in 1972 and GF 3 in 1990.

Puzo finished the book (origionally titled "Mafia") in 1968, so if you have found a copy dated 1970, I think it will be the first edition.

Yes that was the hard cover...Fawcett Crest Books did paperback copyright 1969 and printed 1970...whivch is normal for paperback to follow hardcover by several months....
