Women offering the opening or closing prayer at the conference really wasn't that big of a deal. They do so in weekly Sunday church meetings all the time. The problem is, these "Mormon feminists" (which is really a contradiction in terms) are seeking more than that. They are so hung up on "gender equality" that they are more concerned about bringing the world into the church than bringing the church into the world. They think they can change church doctrine by simply harping on a certain issue when it's not up to them. In the past, some have even been ex-communicated.

Recently, the "National Organization for LDS Democrats" was announced. While small and relatively inconsequential, it still doesn't make much sense to me. I'm not saying Mormons have to be Republican. I'm certainly not a Republican. But I don't now how these supposedly believing LDS members can get past certain conflicting problems between the standard Democratic party platform and LDS beliefs on things like abortion or gay marriage. Actually, many of them don't get passed it. They just ignore it. Their lack of understanding in the church they profess to believe in leads them to think those issues are marginal ones and some of them even hope the church will eventually "come around" to their way of thinking. They're delusional.

The conference is held twice a year, in April and October. It's held at the conference center in downtown Salt Lake City but is televised throughout the world through the Church's satellite system. I've been there in person a few times but usually just watch it live on TV. It's televised locally here on a public station (KSL channel 5) which the church owns.

I didnt realize that Harry Reid, Tom Udall, and Jon Huntsman are all Mormons.

I don't know much about Udall but don't get me started on Reid or Huntsman. My problem with Reid, one of the top guys in the Democratic party, has already been stated. Unlike his father, Huntsman Jr. is pretty much a Mormon in name only. Some of his statements during the race said as much. Unfortunately, I can say the same thing about Romney, which is a big reason why I didn't vote for him either.

It's also surprising to see some of the famous people that grew up Mormon and/or have family who is Mormon. Ryan Gosling, Eliza Dushku, even porn star Belladonna .

I believe that Johnny Miller (golf) and Steve Young (49ers QB) are also Mormons.

Ive seen quite a number of Hispanic mormons in NYC.

There's many black Mormons. And there's been missionaries in New York City, including Harlem, going back longer than any of us were alive.

I was with a lot of black Mormons down in Atlanta on my mission. Many of them were converts from black Baptist churches and what not. What was funny is, they still had some of their same habits like saying "Amen" when somebody was speaking or during a prayer. And the older women still wore those big hats.

I don't know how common knowledge it is among the general public but there are A LOT of Mormons from the Pacific Islands (Hawaii, Tonga, Samoa, etc), which were among the first places Mormon missionaries went to in the early days. Here in Utah, we have wards that are almost entirely Polynesian. If you look at the rosters of the BYU or Utah football teams, a good chunk of both are Polynesian.



I assume this joke is referring to many Mormon girls getting married relatively young, which is certainly true in relative terms. The average age is about 24. But in terms of "virginity," my guess is you'll find more girls who are virgins here in Utah than just about anywhere else, where premarital sex is the norm.

By the way, I completely object to this word "progressive." That's just a newer, polished up word for "liberal." And liberals are experts at changing terms to fit their agenda. It's not "pro-abortion," it's "pro-choice." See how they turn a negative into a positive! We're not liberal, we're progressive. We're evolving.
