Chris without the protection of Tony would have been whacked by Richie Aprile in Season 2. He would've been whacked by Junior in season 1 if it wasn't for Tony. Junior wanted to hit both Filone and Moltisanti, but ultimately, and due to Tony being his "nephew", Junior opts to kill Filone and order a mock execution on Moltisanti as a warning.

I think Livia was actually the one who saved him from being whacked out by Junior. He had put up her storm windows for her one year....

Chris would have been dead long before he got made if not for Tony.He was a loose cannon,a junkie, and a hothead. Once he did get made,Tony continued to overlook a lot of things that would have resulted in a death sentence for any other soldier.
The family connection was all that kept Chris around. Remember early on when Tony basically told Chris that he was going to isolate himself from the Family business more and more, and that Chris would be the one passing along Tony's orders, with the eventual goal of Chris taking the reins?
For a relative, Tony could overlook just about anything except the drug addiction, which in the end is what got Chris killed.Tony finally realized that Chris would never get clean. Tony knew that not only would Chris's work suffer, but he could still get popped on a drug charge and flip. The last straw was the look on Tony's face when he saw the baby carrier in the back seat after the wreck.
Chris finally went too far, even by Tony's standards.

He should have been done when he laughed at brendons joke about Jackie aprile being chemo sabe, the one where Tony seizes Brendon and throws him out of the office and into a table of pork.

No way would Christopher have been anything if it wasn't for Tony. He was too reckless in the early seasons, and too much of a junkie in the later ones. I don't know if he would have been clipped along with Brendan (although it would be likely given that Tony basically saved his bacon from that situation; if he wasn't related would Tony have done that?), but he probably wouldn't have been given as many opportunities to get ahead.
There's a chance he might have become a made guy, but even if he did he would have never amounted to more than that.

As I recall, the flashback scene in "The Ride" where Christopher tells Tony that Adriana is working for the government was actually filmed for "Long Term Parking." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIH40bTNPZ0Starting at 2:05 to 2:55, you see Tony get very angry and upset, and for a good reason. Christopher was much more chatty with Adriana about the business, and who knows what she picked up when he was abusing heroin. Whacking the two of them would have been a good story line, but I wonder what the blowback from the FBI would have been if both were disappeared at the same time.

And in Meadowlands, Christopher was completely insubordinate, openly questioning Tony's leadership (love Silvio's wince at 2:34). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIH40bTNPZ0I still find that odd that that particular scene was filmed in the front part of Bada Bing. Between Tony trying to read, and Pussy and Paulie playing cards, one would think that's more appropriate of the back office. The set for the back office existed at the time -- the opening scene of S1E2 "46 Long" was in the Bada Bing back office.
